Two thousand twenty and twenty-one have been tough because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is especially true of teens. It all “boils down to the fact” that most students feel alone, sad, annoyed, and bored doing the same things over and over again. Some of us have no motivation to do anything and adults just don't understand. My characters are exaggerated versions of students who hate remote learning. I wanted to make a film that made fun of the situation because at the end of the day that’s life - you may not like it, but you can still find happiness.

In this work I wanted to portray the reality of remote learning. I wanted adults to see what teens feel like every day as they cope with remote instruction. I also wanted to make a video that my peers could relate to.

When I was trying to come up with an idea for my animation, COVID- 19 was becoming more serious. I wanted my animation to be humorous to uplift everyone’s mood. I used fairytale scenery to make my animation wholesome. I decided to add color to the dragonfly and add a belt for the hero’s sword. I planned out the script and all the characters’ actions. I drew each frame one at a time. Once I finished, I added sound effects to set the mood. I really hope my animation makes someone smile during these hard times.

The LGBTQIA+ community is always discriminated against for loving who they want to love. In making this film I wanted to say everyone is equal, everyone is human, and it is not wrong to love the same gender. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I feel that we deserve more acknowledgment. We are tired of being threatened, our lives put at stake, and even killed just because we exist as homosexuals.

Many students are currently experiencing mental health issues while dealing with remote learning during the pandemic. That reality impacted me, not only as a student but as a filmmaker. It made me want to put together a film that helped express what I believe many are feeling. I wanted to use my voice to advocate for those students who do not have the opportunity to express how remote learning makes them feel.

I wanted to make an animation that showed what the quarantine was like in the beginning and how people were isolated, but then found ways to communicate with one another. It is important to keep your hands clean and keep a distance from others to stay safe.

I decided to make a film about the Lgbtq+ community, to show how people can put aside hatred and come together. I also wanted to show that everyone should be able to love who they want and not be treated differently because of their choices. I hope that this inspires others to make positive changes in their own communities and in themselves.

My film was inspired by western movie aesthetics - a lighthearted film in which a cowboy is transported to another realm. Due to the pandemic, I opted for filming everything in my house. Filming the entire thing was a “one person band” me, my phone, and a LOT of tape. I enjoyed the whole thing, embarrassing myself in front of family members who were confused by my rain boots, cow-print cowboy hat, and layers of scarves. As goofy as my film is, I'm really proud of it and couldn't have done it without the constructive criticism of my peers and teachers.

This is an experimental project. The images included within this montage are meant to convey the emptiness and overall bleakness of the situation that we were thrust into over a year ago. I wanted to force viewers to experience the eerily quiet inactivity out in the streets juxtaposed with the solitude students were experiencing in their homes. I wanted to showcase the day-to-day changes that have been felt by millions of people around the world. I wanted to capture the overall feeling of quiet and emptiness we were all forced to endure.
