Q & A
Q & A
Q: How many classrooms will there be?
There will be a total of 4 classrooms. As of now, we will have 2-3's and 2-4's. However, if the second 3's classroom does not fill up, we will have a 3/4 split, or an additional 4's classroom. Both ages will receive age appropriate activities during small group and large group times, however, there will be some times of the day (outside) where they will all be together.
Q: Will there be a pre-K Round-up?
We will have a pre-K Round-up IF we do not have the majority of our slots filled by the beginning of May. This would take place the first week of June. Continue to monitor the SCS social media pages for more information. An email will also be sent notifying you of this event.
Q: Do you have to be a Schoolcraft resident for my child to attend?
You do not have to be a Schoolcraft resident for your child to attend. The 3-year-old program does have potential funding for tuition, therefore, because it is a county program, you do have to reside in Kalamazoo County. The 4-year-old program has potential funding for state and county funding. Again, the county program does require you to be a resident of Kalamazoo County; the state funded program does not require you to be a resident of Kalamazoo County, but prioritization is given to Kalamazoo County residents. If you are currently not a resident of Kalamazoo County but will be prior to the start of the 2026/2027 school year, please let me know.
Q: Am I guaranteed a spot for my child?
Spots for the 3's program are first-come-first-serve. The 4's program is a little bit trickier because there are several factors that are considered when assigning a slot to a child. My suggestion is to submit your child's application. Even if you feel your family income will exceed the limit, please still submit it. Here are the 'Accepted' dates for Kalamazoo County residents:
April 13: First round of acceptance for 4's (income up to 300% FPL)
April 19: First round of acceptance for 3's (potential tuition assistance)
May 11: Second round of acceptance for 4's (income up to 500% FPL)
Mid-May: Second round of acceptance for 3's (potential tuition assistance)
June 8: Third round of acceptance for 4's (income over 500% FPL)
If your family does not qualify for tuition assistance for the 3's program, acceptance will be based on the date the application was completed. When your application is complete, your child's enrollment standing will be 'Waitlisted'. Out-of-county families will be accepted on/after August 1.
Q: Do I have to turn in all required documents before my child is 'Waitlisted'?
Yes, you must. They are sticklers on this but if you are having a difficult time obtaining any of the documents, please reach out to KRESA or me. Once a child is ‘Waitlisted’, they will be placed on the list and potentially receive tuition assistance and placed in a classroom.
Q: What is the application process?
The application process begins with you completing either a paper copy of the application (available online or at the SCS elementary school office) or the online application - link available on 3- and 4-year-old page . Once the application is complete, be sure to upload ALL required documents or if you are filling out a paper copy, either send them in with the application or email everything to nealj@schoolcraftcs.org. Once everything is received, your child's enrollment standing will go to 'Waitlisted'. Before a child can be accepted into a program, they must have ALL documents submitted.
Q: How will you know I want my child to attend Schoolcraft pre-K?
There is a question/statement on the application for location preference/choice. If you put 'Schoolcraft' then your child's name will appear on the report that I print out several times a week. To make sure that your child is flagged for Schoolcraft, I would recommend emailing me to let me know that you have completed the application. My email is nealj@schoolcraftcs.org
Q: Does my child have to attend all of the scheduled days?
To be considered for tuition assistance, a child does have to attend all scheduled days (3's: M-F from 8:00am-2:30pm; 4's: M-Th from 8:00am-2:50pm and Friday from 8:00am-11:00am). For the 3's, if you do not want your child to attend all 5 days, you can pick and choose their days, but will be required to pay the full tuition rate.
Q: Do I need to complete a new application if I've already had a child attend pre-K?
Yes, you do. Again, once you have completed the application and submitted all of the required documents, please email me to let me know so that I can put 'Schoolcraft' as your first program choice.
Q: Will I have to bring any supplies for my child?
The only supplies you will need to provide for your child will be a full-size backpack, any pull-up & wipes if they are not fully potty trained, and a water bottle. Occasionally, teachers will ask for a notebook or a binder. We provide a sheet and blanket for rest time and all general classroom supplies.
Q: Is there before or after school care?
There will be before school care beginning at 7:30 for SCS staff members and after school care until 4:30 for all children. If you need before school care, please let me know as this may be adjusted to include all children.
Q: Do you accept subsidy payments?
This is still something we are looking into and hope to have an answer soon.
