Zephyrus Zeta was launched on June 8th, 2025. The purpose of this launch was to record cosmic radiation after a significant solar storm earlier in the week. It was the second of a two launch series examining the impact of solar storms on particles in the atmosphere.
Path predictions, including burst calculations and flight parameters are pictured above.
The balloon was launched from Calvert Regional Park in North East Maryland.
The balloon flew for 2 hours and 16 minutes. The balloon landed high in a tree in Newtown Square, PA. Recovery was initially unsuccessful as the team's attempts to remove the payload from the tree were ineffective. With permission from the property owners, professional tree climbers were hired and returned the next day to retrieve the payload. All payload components survived the flight and successfully recorded data.
