The third HERA coordinated launch took place on May 31st, 2026. HERA sites in Pennsylvania, Texas, California, Georgia, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Quebec were involved in launch planning and logistics. Due to weather (snowstorm in NH May!) and other logistics, some sites were unable to launch, but Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Quebec all got balloons in the air!
The information below is for the PA site, Devil Dragon Balloon Team.
Three balloons were launched from the PA site at Camp Blue Diamond in Petersburg, PA. Sunset and Midnight balloons were launched on the evening of Saturday, May 30th. The third balloon, the Coordinated balloon, was launched on Sunday, May 31st, in tandem with balloons from our partner sites across North America. Path predictions, payload stacks, launch roles, equipment responsibilities, and a coordinated launch timing summary are included in the spreadsheet above.
Launch footage for the Sunset balloon.
The Sunset and Midnight balloons were recovered from fields with the cooperation of neighbors at the landing sites. The Coordinated balloon lost GPS and APRS in flight, and no telemetry data was transmitted after launch. The Coordinated balloon was not recovered and has not yet been found due to the lack of information on the landing location.
