In The Touch Series, students will explore the theme of human connection through photography by focusing on physical touch. The project will involve capturing three distinct interactions between people—through handshakes, hugs, or subtle gestures—conveying different emotional tones or stories. Each interaction will be presented as a triptych (a series of three images), allowing students to explore the progression of touch, its emotional depth, and its narrative potential.
Students will develop three triptychs that capture varying types of touch and interaction. This series will encourage them to consider how sequential images tell a more comprehensive story than a single shot. They will learn to compose, light, and edit these photographs in a way that highlights the meaning and significance of human touch.
Connection through Sequence: A triptych allows students to communicate a deeper story by showing progression or change in a moment of touch.
Human Interaction and Emotion: Different forms of touch convey distinct emotions, and photography can capture the subtleties of these interactions.
Narrative Photography: By using a series of images, students can communicate how a relationship or interaction evolves.
How can a series of photographs (triptych) communicate a more complex narrative about human connection than a single image?
What emotions and relationships are conveyed through touch, and how can photography capture these subtle interactions?
How can lighting, composition, and framing enhance the meaning behind touch in a photographic series?
How do the sequence and spacing of images in a triptych affect the overall interpretation of the story being told?
Triptych: A series of three images that are intended to be viewed together, often telling a story or exploring variations of a theme.
Gesture: Physical actions or movements that convey emotion or meaning.
Sequential Photography: The use of multiple images to show the progression or development of a moment or story.
Framing: The way a subject is positioned and bordered within the photograph to direct the viewer’s attention.
Negative Space: The empty or open areas around the subject that emphasize the primary focus of the photograph.
Body Language: The non-verbal communication conveyed through posture, gesture, and touch.
Lighting: The arrangement of light in a photograph that influences the mood, tone, and focus.
Narrative Photography: Photography that tells a story through a series of images or a focused subject matter.
VAHSAPR.CR.1: Engage in the creative process to generate and visualize ideas.
VAHSAPR.CR.2: Apply materials, techniques, and processes with skill and awareness to achieve a desired result in photography.
VAHSAPR.CR.3: Develop an artwork based on personal experience and ideas.
VAHSAPR.PR.1: Present a finished body of work to demonstrate intent, skill, and meaning.
VAHSAPR.RE.1: Reflect on the effectiveness of communication of ideas in personal artwork and the work of others.
VAHSAPR.CN.2: Make connections between art and other disciplines.
You will be graded on the following:
Final evaluation based on the three completed triptychs. Assessment will focus on the use of gesture, composition, lighting, and overall storytelling. Participation in critique and reflections will also be considered.
