The challenge is to design and build the tallest straw tower possible, given limited time and resources.
Materials- 10 drinking straws and 10 cm of masking tape/ Time- 5 minutes
Using 50 plastic cups, students will design and build a structure using the engineering design process.
Students will create a sculpture utilizing materials found in and around Savannah that could have been recycled in the City’s Recycling Program .
The R³ Art Challenge Sculpture
3 Weeks Later
Design a simple tin foil boat, and see how many passengers it can hold before it sinks (Captain Nickel & Passenger Pennies).
I can create a paper airplane that can fly.
The 4th-8th grade students have created STEM Websites which they use to take notes during the design process. Each grade level is completing a different Engineering Project. These projects will continue throughout the rest of this semester and the websites will be added to along the way. Take a look at some of the websites in progress:
Problem: The State Association for the Development of Fun and Amusement has decided to develop a toy to be sold to tourists on Tybee Island, Georgia. They have hired you to design and build a model of the toy with moving parts that you think would attract tourists. The toy should attract tourists of ages 0-1, 2-4, 5-7, or 8-12. The toy must have moving parts. Each student will create a model toy out of various materials appropriate for your chosen age group. The finished product must be ready for Testing by May 6th. Use the steps of the Design Process to create your design and model toy.
Problem: The State Association for the Development of Fun and Amusement has decided to develop a maze attraction on Tybee Island, Georgia. They have hired you to design and build a 3D model of the maze that you think would bring in tourists. The theme park should attract tourists of all ages and is required to follow basic maze rules. Each student will create a model of a marble maze. The marble maze model must be a minimum of 10 inch x 15 inch space. The finished product must be ready for Testing by May 6th. Use the steps of the Design Process to create your design and model maze.
Problem: The State Association for the Development of Fun and Amusement has decided to develop a theme park on Tybee Island, Georgia. They have hired you and your groupmates to design and build a 3D scale model of the theme park that you think would bring in tourists. The theme park should attract tourists of all ages and should include at least one of each of the following attractions: 1) a ride, 2) a restaurant, 3) a shop, and 4) a game/show. Each student will contribute a scale model section of the theme park that fits on top of a 20 inch x 30 inch foam board. Keep in mind that the scale model should include the attractions, walking paths, and landscaping. Your group will divide up the design and building tasks, but will work together to create a common theme for the park. The finished product must be ready for Testing by May 6th.
Problem: The State Association for the Development of Fun and Amusement has decided to develop a wind-powered boat ride on Tybee Island, Georgia. They have hired you to design and build a 3D scale model of the wind-powered sailing vehicle that you think would bring in tourists. The boat ride should attract tourists of all ages. Each student will create a scale model boat that fits in a 10 inch x 15 inch area. The finished product must be ready for Testing by May 6th. Use the steps of the Design Process to create your design and 3D scale model.
Problem: The State Association for the Development of Fun and Amusement has decided to develop a Better Booby Trap attraction on Tybee Island, Georgia, to help celebrate Pirate Week. They have hired you to design and build a Rube-Goldberg-machine-inspired booby trap for their new Pirate Week attraction. A Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption that accomplishes a simple task in a fantastically complicated way. The booby trap should work using a minimum of 4 out of the 6 simple machines: 1) Inclined Plane, 2) Screw, 3) Wedge, 4) Lever, 5) Wheel-and-Axle, or 6) Pulley. Each student will create a booby trap that fits in a 20 inch x 30 inch area. The finished product must be ready for Testing by May 6th. Use the steps of the Design Process to create your design and model booby trap.
THE SCIENCE OF COOKING
LA CIENCIA DE COCINAR
"AREPAS CON QUESO"
Following a recipe in the target language students were able to utilize measuring cups to create their dish.
Inspired on the Disney Movie "Encanto" Students had the opportunity to bring to live one of the most popular dishes of the country of Colombia, Arepas!!!
