Wind Instrument

ASK: Why don't all sounds "sound" the same?IMAGINE: The classes discussed that the sound wave that is made from an instrument can be affected by changing the length of part of the instrument. Students brainstormed different ways that we can create our instrument to make different sound lengths.PLAN: Students then designed a wind instrument that created different sounds focusing on their sound waves.CREATE: Students used their plans to create a wind instrument that made different sounds.

TEST: Students went outside to test their instruments

IMPROVE: Students discussed different materials and different ways to create their instruments to make the sound better.

THE SOLUTION: Creating a model and testing

In this activity students, first, used a variety of materials to design and create a wind instrument. Then, students applied steps of the engineering design process to identify a problem. Next, students developed possible solutions and selected the most promising solution. Finally, students created their models and tested them.
