From these 18 awardees, SCATA will also select two state applicants to submit to the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators (NAFEPA) Scholarship opportunity. As the district winner, Makena will have the opportunity to compete with other district winners for a $1,500 (first place), one $1,000 (second place) or one $500 (third place) scholarship. The top two applications will be considered at the state level for the national NAFEPA scholarship. - Tracie Sweet, SCPCSD Director of Federal Programs
Makena Griffis is the quintessential picture of a student leader. Her goal has always been to serve not only her school, but also her community through her time and talents. Makena has been an active member if not a leader in almost every club offered at Fox Creek High School. During her 4 years at Fox Creek Makena has been a member of the International Club, Yearbook Staff, Chess Club, Salsa Club, Junior & Senior Advisory, Beta Club, NHS, Teacher Cadet, Interact Club, and Renaissance Crew to name a few clubs. She also was a member of the JV and Varsity Cheer squads as well as the Varsity Swim Team.
Academically, Makena has maintained a very high GPA while taking the hardest courses offered at Fox Creek all while continuously volunteering her time as well as cheering on the athletic teams as well as competing with our Competitive Cheer Squad. She also has been recognized for her poetic ability, public speaking, was awarded the West Point Military Award during her Junior year, was nominated her senior year for the DAR Good Citizen Award.
Outside of school, Makena has served on the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student Task Force where she helped to raise over $20,000 to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. She also has served her community as a greeter at the local church, volunteered at Elementary schools around the town, Special Olympics, North Augusta Optimist Club Pancake Breakfast, as well as local fundraisers and organized events for students with disabilities.
Fox Creek High School is honored to have Makena as a student for four years, and we are thrilled to see her being recognized for her many accomplishments.
