Angela Stockman will lead students through an experience that combines making and writing.

She spent twelve years teaching elementary, middle, and high school writers in Western New York State before founding the WNY Young Writers’ Studio - a community of K-12 writers and teachers of writing - and stepping out of the classroom to become a professional learning facilitator.

9:40 - 10:20 Thanksgiving Around the World

Led by Mayra Kirkendall-Rodríguez:

We will define origins of Thanksgiving, identify countries in North America where Thanksgiving is celebrated (US & Canada), and describe and demonstrate ways Thanksgiving is celebrated on other continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe).

10:20 - 10:50 Colorful Guizhou

Led by Jingqing Chai and Chunzi Zhang:

We will highlight the history of this Chinese province, with a population far larger than the entire state of New York, compare and contrast the Miao, Dong, and Buyi cultures, and tour some of the most beautiful waterfalls, caves, and forests in China.

11:00 - 11:30 Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity

Have you ever walked into a room and felt that no one is quite like you? Please join us as we read The Day You Begin, by Jacqueline Woodson. We will discuss what makes each of us unique and how sharing personal stories with others shows us that we have a lot of similarities, too. We will then draw a picture of the special things that make us unique.

Supplies: Please bring a plain piece of paper, pencil and crayons or colored pencils.

12:40 - 1:10 Festive Turkey Art Activity
(supplies needed)

Led by Aaron Landman:

Thanksgiving is a special time to spend with family and give thanks for the many wonderful things in our lives. During this festive art activity, we will create a colorful turkey collage.

Supplies Needed: Acrylic or tempera (Red, Orange, Yellow, or any available colors)

9" Paper Dinner Plate (1 for project, and 1 to use as paint palette)

Colored Construction paper (brown, grey, orange, red, blue, pink — or any available colors)

Large Googly eyes (or use white & black construction paper for eyes)

Foam Brush (or sponge) for painting

Scissors (with adult supervision)

Glue (bottle or stick)

1:10 - 1:40 Christmas in the Czech Republic
(supplies needed)

Led by Martina Vargova:

We will define what Christmas is and how it is celebrated in the Czech Republic, and create a Christmas craft Candle holder.

Supplies Needed: Red apple, 4 short pieces of skewer sticks or toothpicks to support the apple in an upright position, 1 birthday candle (preferably thin and of a shorter size), piece of small festive ribbon, small evergreen branch, a few whole cloves

1:45 - 2:15 From Ramadan to Eid
(supplies needed)

Led by Nilo Sharifi, Talaiya Safdar, Mahadi Ali Baig:

Presentation will include a few brief videos of the presenters’ children explaining how they observe Ramadan and celebrate Eid in their homes.

Supplies Needed: Paper, markers, scissors, and pencil for a craft.
