9:40 - 10:20 Russia and the Arts
Led by Mayra Kirkendall-Rodríguez, this activity will:
Provide background about Russia’s history and geography, identify key famous Russian arts, review language, architecture, literature, music, dance, and crafts, provide with resources to learn more.
This presentation will include a few clips of Russian ballet, Cossack dancers and Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2
10:20 - 10:50 Mario the Maker Magician

You are invited to a special interactive Zoom edition of The Mario Show! It’s magic through the lens of the Maker Movement, full of handmade robotics, punk rock slapstick, and even a DIY magic lesson that you can create from home!
Mario has appeared on Sesame Street, NBC’s Universal Kids, and live on tour opening for David Blaine, who calls Mario “the best kids magician in the world!!” He’s also the author of The Maker Magician’s Handbook, a DIY magic book for maker kids! We can’t wait to share with you Mario’s STEAM-inspired magic show experience!
Please gather the following supplies, to play along: a paper or plastic disposable cup, playing cards, scissors, invisible tape, and a brown paper lunch bag.

Highlight history of Diwali, showcase foods eaten and clothes worn during Diwali, explain what fun activities kids do during this holiday.

Angela Stockman will lead students through an experience that combines making and writing.
She spent twelve years teaching elementary, middle, and high school writers in Western New York State before founding the WNY Young Writers’ Studio - a community of K-12 writers and teachers of writing - and stepping out of the classroom to become a professional learning facilitator.

How can you get the colored water to move from one glass to another using paper towels? What new colors can you make?

Led by Sarah Knapp Smith, this activity will:
Describe basic facts about Hanukkah, Identify Hanukkah traditions including a Menorah, Gelt, Songs, Food, and the Dreidel.
2:20 - 2:50 Winter Solstice: Estonia & Northern Europe
Led by Britta Hion, this activity will:
Identify Estonia on a map, describe how winter is celebrated in Northern Europe, review ancient customs and how they have evolved over time, present a story about the origins of the Christmas tree, compare and contrast Estonian customs to those of other Nordic countries.
