How Do I Support My ELs ?

Essential Characteristics of ELD Instruction

  • Collaborate. Use discussion supports for pairs, triads, small groups/table groups, whole group, and cooperative learning structures,
  • Create discussion behaviors and how to use discussion starters to contribute ideas, confirm ideas, extend or build on ideas of others, offer different viewpoints, and ask questions.
  • Use anchor charts.
  • Engaging Lessons
  • Build Background Knowledge- Use phenomena in science!
  • Group with intension and purpose.
  • Be familiar with characteristics of ELs, proficiency levels, backgrounds of ELLs, and content and language outcomes.
  • Use visual supports (pictures, manipulatives, videos, and real-life objects)
  • Use graphic supports (charts, tables, timelines, graphic organizers, and number lines) within ELD instruction.
  • Use academic registers.
  • Use familiar protocols for class activities: Discussion Web, Save the Last Word, Favorite Sentence/Key Sentence.
  • Have an action plan.
  • Linguistic supports (vocabulary instruction, word level scaffolds, morphology, and types of context clues)
  • Don't dumb down the content. Use complex texts with linguistic supports.
  • Provide linguistic supports specific to grammar and syntax.
  • Deconstruct and construct complex sentences with meaning.
  • Implement close reading combined with collaborative conversation stems, direct instruction, study skills, and taking class notes.
  • Participate in backwards planning using all three phases: defining desired results, determining evidence of learning, and designing instruction.
  • Collaborate with your peers!! The district gives you time to review data and plan for success during wheel time.
