Supporting Academic Discourse

Nearly 49% of the students in Santa Barbara Unified School District were, are Life long- English Language Learners. Over 25% are categorized as English Language Learners (ELL) while the other 24% were initially proficient or have been redesignated as English proficient. Still, the numbers are grim. Of the ELLs in 3rd-8th and 11th graders tested using the 2016 CAASP, 8% met or exceeded and 30% nearly met the language arts learning standards. What if we could go back in time, before the test. What would be the 3 or 4 things that could change in our pedogogy? What would stay?

The good news is, there is room for growth- lot's of it. Research from independent institutions show that GLAD strategies work to promote both academic input and output from students.

How do we scaffold content? How do we scaffold for argumentation?
