Class Description
ProStart I & II are courses designed to guide you in the discovery of restaurant management, food preparation, nutrition, and meal management. Culinary skills are strongly emphasized throughout each course. It is required that students pass Foods & Wellness and Advanced Foods prior to enrolling in ProStart I. Additionally, it is required that students complete and pass ProStart I before enrolling in ProStart II, unless permission is granted by the course instructor. Kitchen safety, food sanitation, and proper use and understanding of equipment will be studied and demonstrated. Etiquette, menu planning, event coordination, costs, and consumer responsibility will also be explored.
The food and beverage industry has quickly become a very progressive and popular career choice. With that in mind, careers in the industry will be investigated and thoroughly researched throughout the course.
Students in this course will participate in ProStart, a national two-year restaurant and food service program. Students will showcase culinary skill and technique, management skills, and workplace achievement. Students will have the opportunity to compete in the culinary and management ProStart competitions in the spring. Successful completion of the two-year course can lead to program certification.
