Santa Barbara Middle School Canoe Expedition Equipment List

Pack all of your gear and food into ONE waterproof Ortlieb bag. Put your name on everything. All cook group food requiring refrigeration should go into no more than two gallon ziplocs per cook group.

You can buy or rent most of the following gear in the SBMS Warehouse (WH), which will be open Tuesdays 2:45-3:45pm, Wednesdays 9-10am or by appointment. Email erik@sbms.org to schedule a time.

Camping Gear (Individual)

  • Sleeping Bag (lightweight, compact & synthetic)
  • Sleeping Pad & inflatable Pillow (can also use rolled up jacket)
  • Headlamp & extra Batteries
  • Eating kit: Hot/Cold Cup, Bowl, Spoon, Fork
  • Water bottles/hydration packs that hold at least 2 liters
  • Four gallon size ziplocs (these always come in handy)
  • Daypack/backpack - might get wet
  • Towel (quick drying pack)
  • First aid kit (No Meds in Kit)


Camping Gear (Shared with tent/cook mate)

  • Tent
  • Lightweight backpacking stove (WH rental $12.00, WH purchase $21.75)
  • 2 fuel canisters for stove per cook group (WH purchase $5 each, no rentals)
  • 1 Light weight 1.5 qt pot with lid per cook group (WH purchase $24)
  • 1 lighter for stove

Clothing, etc.

  • One set of moisture wicking long underwear – top and bottom (polypro/capilene)
  • One Fleece Top
  • One set of rain gear (pants and jacket)
  • One insulated jacket
  • Hats: sun hat (for the water) AND beanie for cold nights
  • Two pairs of shorts - quick drying recommended
  • Two long sleeved shirts (1 polypro)
  • Two short sleeve shirts (NO tank tops)
  • Five pairs of underwear
  • Four pairs of socks (some wool or wicking)
  • Hiking/running shoes for day hikes
  • Water shoes - strap on sandals (ie: Tevas, Keens - NO FLIP FLOPS), or old pair of running shoes for canoeing
  • Two Swimsuits
  • Warm gloves for night time

Toiletries

  • Biodegradable Soap (ie: Dr. Bronners or CampSuds)
  • Sunscreen (an absolute must everyday!! Reef-safe preferred)
  • Toilet kit (tooth brush, paste, floss, brush, deodorant, handi-wipes) in small container
  • Lip balm with spf
  • 2 small Kleenex packets or small roll of toilet paper
  • 1 or 2 wag bags ($5 each)
  • small shampoo/conditioner (for the last night only)

Optional

  • Crazy Creek (or similar lightweight soft) chair to use as a canoe seat
  • Waterproof camera or GoPro
  • Journal
  • Sketchbook & Colored Pencils or Paints
  • Music: Penny-whistle, Harmonica, Kazoo, Ukulele
  • Playing Cards
  • 20L or 30L dry bag for lunch or things you'll need while paddling (could also use a gallon ziploc)
