Why Esports?

from AP Style Guide

Esports is the term used to describe "electronic" sports video game played by professional and amateur player/athletes.  Esports also refers to a growing industry that in addition to game development, includes careers and opportunities in marketing and broadcasting.

The critical thinking, communication and team work required to compete make Esports more than just "playing" video games.  Colleges and universities have recognized the explosion of this new sport and have begun to offer scholarships and play opportunities to students.

Are there any deadlines to get started?

No deadlines! You can jump into either the SBCSS Esports season or the Generation Esports seasons at any time! Understand though that your chances of making it to playoffs are lowered dependning on how many matches you missed. There is a make up week you can utilize to get some of your missed matches in.

Don't let being late to party keep you from coming! Get some matches in and use those to prepare for the next full season!

Isn't this just playing games?

Not at all, esports is about so much more than playing games.  Students player/athletes need to hone their communication skills in order to be successful.  For team play, they need to be able to communicate their actions and strategies during the game.  Students need to be able to resolve their own conflicts and issues with other teams during competitions because unlike traditional sports, once play starts coaches and managers are prohibited from communicating with the team members.  Esports are an excellent way to build student digital citizenship and a sense of belonging to a community at school.
