By definition, trust is "the assured reliance on the character, ability, strength or truth of someone or something; one in which confidence is placed." It is essential that our students identify a Go-To-Person who they can:
can speak to about anything: concerns, problems, casual conversation, sharing positive experiences.
can trust and respect.
are comfortable seeking out.
consider a positive connection.
can approach and feel is a good listener.
feel has your best interest in mind.
Trust focuses on connections, relationships and interactions. Let us all work together to be approachable, to be present and to be positive! Research has proven time and time again that when an individual knows there is someone he/she can go to for help no matter what, it diminishes his/her risk of suicide and other destructive behaviors.
Watch Josh Shipp, "foster kid, class clown, a rebel without a clue, a trouble maker speak about the POWER of ONE caring adult. He was written off, kicked out, and every adult’s worst nightmare until one caring adult changed everything." Please note: There is sensitive content in the beginning of the video.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A TEACHER/SCHOOL STAFF MEMBER IS EXPLAINED BY JOE BECKMAN IN THIS VIDEO, "THE CALLING." DON"T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER YOU HAVE IN THE LIFE OF YOUR STUDENTS!
Listen to how one coach look passed the "disrespectful, punk" kid that was always getting into trouble and helped to change that young man's life. He NEVER wrote him off.
Keep in Mind: Traumatized students begin to express their true rage & distress with people they trust. They don't do this because they think you are an easy target. They do this because they are hopeful you won't abandon them.
