Self-esteem by definition is confidence in one's own worth or abilities accompanied with self-respect. More significant, though, is that self-esteem can be likened to a child's armor against the challenges of the world. When one possesses healthy self-esteem, he/she is more likely to stand up for what he/she believes in without fear of what others may think. Self-esteem is demonstrated by an individual's ability to persevere in the face of obstacles, and, ultimately, find happiness and success in life. Undoubtedly, a necessary trait for all of our students!
As Brene Brown said, "Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love." It is essential that we teach students the benefits and necessity of positive self-talk. Their inner voice should build up and not tear down.
Tips for building confidence in children and young adults. It is essential and healthy that students are given appropriate freedom to make their own choices and to learn from the consequences.
