Throughout the book, you may have noticed tension between Muslim characters and Hindu characters or the reaction that some people had to Kabir and Rani. If you don't have the background for how India was shaped into the country it is today, this might be fairly confusing! Check out these links for clarity.
At the end of British rule in India, Britain decided to separate the land that they had forced together, leaving people on the "wrong side" of the borders for their beliefs.
