8th Grade Science
Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics
Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics
Overview
In eighth grade, students focus around the particles and systems that make up everything on Earth and in the universe.
Chemistry Unit
In our Chemistry Unit, students first focus on laboratory safety and how to properly conduct experiments. Then we move onto measurements and converting numbers into the metric system. From there we get into matter, atoms, and the Periodic Table of Elements. Once we cover atoms, we move onto compounds and mixtures while conducting experiments with the states of matter. We wrap up the chemistry unit doing chemical reactions, pH experiments, and writing proper lab reports.
Geology
In our Geology unit students look at the different types of minerals and rocks that make up Earth and investigate how they are formed by analyzing the rock cycle. Then we move onto Earth's layers and how the layers and the movement of continental plates play a major role in understand what life was like thousands and millions of years ago.
Natural Disasters
In our Natural Disasters unit, we look at the different natural disasters that plague our Earth today. We start with earthquakes then move onto volcanoes and tsunamis. Students look at how each of these natural disasters are measured, studied, and the significant role they play on people around the world. To better understand these natural disasters, students evaluate forms of energy and how energy travels through substances.
Physics: Newton's Laws, Energy, Simple Machines
In our Physics unit, we look at Universal Laws that dictate our everyday lives. We start with the basics of Newton's Laws of Motion and how those laws apply to the simple machines that make our lives easier. Then we examine energy in all its forms and how energy travels and moves through space and time.
