At Farmington High School, (FHS), in Farmington NH we are introducing many new classes that use 21st century learning skills and new technologies.
one of these classes is called "Intro. to STEAM" .
This class delves into the many facets of engineering and the careers within those areas. In a semester it's impossible to get ALL areas uncovered but we explore:
mechanical drawing / drafting
3d modeling
hydroponics
electrical engineering / wiring
computer science / coding
and in 2021-2022 we also introduced Biofabrication / Regenerative Medicine!
Students then learn to use onShape, relying on their sketches and orthographic projection drafts. Onshape has many options that make building almost anything fun! It *is* advanced but many students already know Photoshop or CAD so they usually catch on quickly.
OnShape is similar to Solidworks and Autodesk Inventor.
Students also study Biodiversity, (focusing on crops and bees or pollinators), and learn about Hydroponics and agricultural fields of study/work.
Students also learn about things like: plasmids, e.Coli, engineering cells and more!

After electronics students do some coding in Arduino and continue their electrical wiring, as well.
Students that enjoy coding and wiring then can go onto the class: Intro. to Arduino!
