My name is Karen Utgard but many of the staff and students just call me Nurse Karen. I grew up in Maine and I moved to Dover a few years ago. I live in a little house near the Piscataqua River with my husband, Mike, and my daughter, Stella. I love putting in my kayak and exploring the waterways of the Great Bay region! The birdwatching is fantastic and the history of the United States of America is written along the banks of the Bellamy, Cocheco, Piscataqua, Oyster, Squamscott, Lamprey & Winnicut Rivers! I am an amateur genealogist who has enjoyed many visits to local cemeteries searching for my seacoast ancestors. My english 3-speed bicycles are another favorite conveyance for exploring the back roads in my neighborhood; I rarely miss an opportunity to stop and read an historic marker when I am out for a pedal-about!

I enrolled in nursing school at the University of Southern Maine as an adult and I graduated in 2005 with my bachelor's degree (BSN). Just before graduation, I was invited to join Sigma Theta Tau, the Honor Society of Nursing.

I have had many wonderful work experiences in a variety of professional nursing positions since I became a licensed Registered Nurse! I have worked in a community hospital Special Care Unit taking care of seriously ill patients, as a Visiting Nurse delivering nursing care in patient homes, as a Middle School Nurse in a large (almost 800 students!) regional school in Maine, as a Summer Camp Nurse (shout-out to Fernwood Cove!), as a Nurse-Instructor in a high school career & technical program, and as the Medication Nurse in a long-term care facility.

In 2017, I graduated from the University of New England with a Master's Degree in Education. I believe that an important part of nursing care is teaching people how to understand and care for their health needs so this program was a great way to pick up more teaching tools!

Since beginning my position at New Franklin in 2018, I have joined the New Hampshire School Nurses' Association and have pitched-in with committee work as needed.

This spring, I took and passed a special examination from the National Board for Certification of School Nurses and I am now a Nationally Certified School Nurse. I am thrilled to be working at New Franklin Elementary with such a dedicated, creative & supportive team of educators and a group of families & students who care about each other (& show it)! New Franklin is more than a school to me; it is the heart of a very special village we are lucky to be part of. I know that the learning, love, community and connection we have experienced inside the walls of NFS are big enough to stretch beyond the building and into the homes, hearts and minds of every New Franklin Family!
