Classroom counseling is one of my favorite ways to connect with students. It gives me the opportunity to know every child, build relationships over time and teach social-emotional skills before students necessarily need additional support.
Throughout the school year, K–4 students participate in classroom counseling lessons focused on developmentally appropriate social-emotional skills. Lessons are interactive and build on skills as students grow.We might read a book, practice a strategy, have a class discussion, work through a scenario, play a game or complete a hands-on activity together.
Topics vary by grade level and student needs, but may include understanding and managing emotions, friendship skills, coping strategies, problem-solving, empathy, communication, confidence, conflict resolution, decision-making and asking for help
Themes provide an overall framework for the year. Specific lessons and activities may vary by grade level and may be adjusted throughout the year based on student and school needs.
Lessons may include discussion, children's literature, games, reflection, hands-on activities and opportunities to practice new skills together.
