The Standards for Mathematical Practices

The Standards for Mathematical Practice are a guide to developing strong math problem solvers. Listed below are the eight standards, including student friendly "I can" statements, which teachers talk about with their students during math instruction:

MP.1 - Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them ("I can solve problems without giving up").

MP.2 - Reason abstractly and quantitatively ("I can think about numbers in many ways").

MP.3 - Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others ("I can explain my thinking and try to understand others").

MP.4 - Model with mathematics ("I can show my work in many ways").

MP.5 - Use appropriate tools strategically ("I can use math tools and tell why I chose them").

MP.6 - Attend to precision ("I can work carefully and check my work").

MP.7 - Look for and make use of structure ("I can use what I know to solve new problems").

MP.8 - Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning ("I can solve problems by looking for rules and patterns").
