First Trimester - Fall
We will be getting to know the library, learning how the Library is organized, and reading the Ladybug Picture Book Award Books
We will be getting to know the Library, learning how the Library is organized and reading the Ladybug Picture Book Award Books and using this unit as an opportunity to learn to share our opinions of literature with each other.
We will be refreshing ourselves on how the Library is organized and focusing on learning about using the library catalog. We will also be reading the Ladybug Picture Book Award Books and using this unit as a chance to work our our skills around connecting with literature.
We will be refreshing ourselves on how the Library is organized and focusing on learning about different sections of books - Fiction, Nonfiction, Biographies, etc. We will be learning to use the Library online catalog and finding books in the shelves. We will also be reading the Ladybug Picture Book Award Books
We will be refreshing ourselves on how the Library is organized and focusing on learning about different sections of books - Fiction, Nonfiction, Biographies, etc. We will be learning to use the Library online catalog and finding books in the shelves and also using it to track favorite titles, authors, and ideas for future reading. Students will be introduced to the Great Stone Face Book Award for grades 4-6
Second Trimester - Winter
After finishing up the Ladybug Picture Book Award voting, we will be diving deeper into a unit in Nonfiction books with nonfiction read alouds and activities.
After finishing up the Ladybug Picture Book Award voting, we will be starting a unit in Nonfiction. Students will explore a variety of nonfiction texts and learn how to find them in the library.
After finishing up the Ladybug Picture Book Award voting, We will begin using the library catalog to look for books of personal interest and we will be starting a unit on Nonfiction. We will learn how to find different types of nonfiction in the library and build our skills with nonfiction tools and text features. We will also be exploring the use of databases for information.
After finishing up the Ladybug Picture Book Award voting, we will be starting a unit on Nonfiction. Students will build on previous year's skills and learn to identify nonfiction using terms for five primary types: Traditional Nonfiction, Browseable Nonfiction, Narrative Nonfiction, and Expository Literature.

This year we work on choosing the right tool for the task whether it is personal interest reading or report writing, it's important to know which type of nonfiction will most help students with their needs.
