Creativity

the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.

As art teachers and artists, creativity is at the heart and soul of what we hope to bring to our students. Simply defined by Merriam Webster, “creativity is the ability to create, to bring into being”. Creativity is the imagination in action. That action takes bravery, perseverance and grit. In the words of Henri Matisse "creativity takes courage". Harvard’s Project Zero states that “creativity and the arts are inherently linked, but the arts are not the only domain where creativity takes flight”. Creativity requires one to be original, invent, risk failure and follow through. These skills are important in the arts as well as many aspects of life. We have seen many examples of human creativity flourishing during the Covid crisis, most notably in our students and their families willingness to take the leap to online learning in art. This virtual art show is but a small nod to that creativity!
