The ultimate goal of learning to read is to be able to understand printed text. In First Grade we practice reading everyday in a number of different ways. Sometimes reading is a whole class activity where either I read a book to the class or we all read our own copy of a book and then we locate information such as rhyming words, contractions, nouns, verbs or problems etc. At other times, reading happens in small groups with a teacher. We might use our reading books or some other storybooks that match our abilities. Sharing the job of reading with a partner is another fun way we practice. Our Take Home Decodable stories work really well when we partner read.
In First Grade we use Wonders as our reading program. The children encounter a variety of genres such as fiction, non-fiction, and poetry throughout the 6 units. This series incorporates phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling patterns, word building as well as comprehension strategies to name a few of the skills we cover.
The children are encouraged to add questions, pictures, or other information to our Concept/Question Board as each theme unfolds.
Our ultimate goal is to develop confident readers who LOVE to read! Together we can make this happen. Nightly reading practice is an important part of learning to read. Please make time in your routine to share some books with your child. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to snuggle and share.
