This year in sixth grade we are continuing with Math in Focus. We are starting the year in the B book with chapters 12 and 13. In these chapters, we wiIl be working on statistics and measures of central tendency and variablility.
We will then begin our work with integers and the comparison of integers using a number line. We will continue to build on our fraction skills and apply this to rates, ratios, and proportions. Every chapter includes challenging problem solving that may be represented through bar models, number lines, tables, graphs, concrete models. This will lead us to working with variables, algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities. We will wrap up the year with coordinate planes, area of polygons, and surface areas & volume of solids.
IXL will be used this year as a tool for students to practice skills. Students will complete the diagnostic periodically throughout the school year; this data will then generate an action plan with their current levels and recommended skills. Students are encouraged to practice their skills outside of school, but will also work on them during workshop time and may occasionally be assigned skills as homework.
Extra Math Help
Mondays from 2:20 - 3:20, there will be extra math help in my classroom. This time will be used to review math skills, prepare for tests and quizzes, assist with resubmissions, and help with homework.
I can be available on a different day during the week for extra help if arrangements are made ahead of time.
