Each and every SPA family member has our own unique story. Getting your diploma is important, but so is taking care of yourself along the way. As part of the SPA family, you have access to a number of resources to help you to not only practice good self-care, but to overcome any of the obstacles that try to hold you back in your success.
From the first time you attended your Student Welcome Meeting, you were told that communication is a huge part of being a part of the SPA family. It's really important that you practice good communication skills not only with your school counselor, but with your teachers, your peers, and your family.
Here are some great ways you can do that!
Check your SPA email AT LEAST twice a week! No excuses!
Attend advisory EVERY DAY. Your Advisor is your biggest advocate!
If there are personal things going on in your life that are affecting your school attendance or progress, let someone know! Talk to your advisor or to the school counselor. You might be surprised to find out that some of us have been through some stuff, too, and we can often find ways to help you figure out ways to reduce your stress or cope with some of what's happening. Don't suffer in silence!
Don't get sucked in by peer drama. Do I really need to say more here? I didn't think so.
See something, say something. Yes, we know it's not "cool" to talk when you see someone doing something wrong, but as family we have look out for one another. Having someone's back means looking out for them and making sure they don't mess up their chance at success.
Say what you mean, and mean what you say. Words can be used to educate, inform, hurt, or heal. What will you use them for today?
Attitude is everything. Remember that the attitude you radiate sends a message that is louder than words. Choose a positive aura and radiate success!
In advisory, all students are encouraged to participate in our Mindfulness unit. This unit focuses on helping students to quiet their brain for a bit and learn how to relax. Many of our students are pushing themselves way beyond their manageable stress level trying to balance home, school, and work. Mindfulness is a tool that students can use to re-focus their mind so that their class time can be more productive and their overall health and stress levels are more manageable.
Our Mindfulness activities can be accessed for FREE on the Mindful Choices Website. Try them for yourself!
SPA Staff are certified in teen mental health that “teaches how to recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges ... how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person toward appropriate care if necessary. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions.”
Our Students are taught teen Mental Health First Aid which “teaches high school students how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health or substance use issues in their friends and peers.”
This is a 5 session course taught to our students by TMHFA certified staff in partnership with NAMI Delaware.
For more information on Teen Mental Health First Aid, go to the TMHFA website: https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/population-focused-modules/teens/
