Who Am I?

Greetings!

My name is Laura Malmstrom and I am the proud school counselor for Sarah Pyle Academy. I started at Sarah Pyle Academy in 2006-2007 school year and am happy to say that I love my job today just as much as the first day I walked in the door!

I earned my master’s degree in education and school counseling at Wilmington University. I also have a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Delaware. As an Assistant Adjunct Professor at Wilmington University since 2005, I have taught both graduate and undergraduate courses. In the psychology department, I have taught Psychology of the Exceptional Child, Theories of Personality, and Child Development. At the graduate level I have taught multiple courses in the MEC program including Principles and Practices of the Guidance Program, Career Development, and Tools and Techniques of Counseling.

I am a mother of two children, both in college. My children are not only my inspiration for wanting to help others, but their own personal struggles and battles have given me a wealth of experience that I use to help other families persevere.

I am currently a proud member of both the Delaware School Counseling Association and the American School Counselor Association. I served as a member of the Delaware School Counselor Association board for several years, serving in various capacities including President and Legislative Chair. In Spring 2018, I was honored to be recognized as Counselor of the Year for the State of Delaware and serve as the 2019 Counselor of the Year at the National Recognition ceremony in February 2019.

In addition to serving as school counselor for Sarah Pyle Academy, I am also one of the coordinators for the Admissions team, and also serve as co-district chair for school counselors for the Christina School District.

So with all of that said, on a personal note I just want to say that I love my Sarah Pyle family more than words can describe. I hope to work at SPA for many years to come, and enjoy finding ways to help students overcome barriers and develop the skills they need to make their dreams come true.

Thank you!

Laura Malmstrom
