Carers

Who they are:

This topic refers to unpaid carers only.

Unpaid carers:

are people who provide regular and ongoing care for a friend or family member who, due to illness, disability, mental health condition, or old age, cannot cope without their support.

This care is unpaid and often involves helping with everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, or personal care.

Young carers:

A young carer is an unpaid carer aged under-18.

Young carers may sacrifice their own childhoods and social lives to fulfill their caring roles.

Kinship:

refers to the full-time or part-time care of a child by a relative or close family friend (also known as a kinship carer) because their parents are unable to do so.

Crossroads Caring for Carers

Who they are:

❓ 'Crossroads Caring for Carers, an affiliated member of the Carers Trust since 2012, provides a wide range of community care services across Sandwell, Birmingham and the Black Country.'

End of Life and Bereavement

What is it?

End of life:

refers to the final stages of a person's life, leading up to their death.

Bereavement:

is the period of mourning and grief after losing someone close to you, usually through death.

It encompasses the emotional and physical reactions to the loss, as well as the process of adjusting to life without that person.

Who they are:

Who they are:

Family Problems

What is it?

Abortion:

is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy.

In the UK, it is legal under certain circumstances.

Family rights:

are about protecting families and making sure everyone is safe and cared for.

It includes the right to live together, raise children as you choose, and be protected from harm.

Missing people:

are people who have disappeared and whose whereabouts are unknown, causing concern for their safety.

Living in Care and Care Leavers

Who they are:

Looked after children:

are children who are under the care of a local authority in the UK.

This means that they are not living with their birth parents or other family members, and the local authority is responsible for their welfare and safety.

Care leavers:

are young people (usually between 16 and 25 years old) who have been looked after by the local authority for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14, and who were in care on or after their 16th birthday.
