Walker's Research Science Process:
Engagement Problem Statement:
Family and community engagement is a concern at Walker Elementary. Only 2% of families participate in Walker activities one or more days per month. Our underlying challenge is the need to build a stronger sense of belonging among students, families, and staff. This lack of belonging makes it difficult for families to feel welcomed, connected, and empowered to participate in school life in meaningful ways. When families do not feel a strong connection to the school community, trust and collaboration remain limited, reducing their comfort in partnering with staff and their understanding of how to support their child’s school experience. When families feel a sense of belonging, students demonstrate higher engagement, improved attendance, stronger social-emotional skills, and better academic outcomes. Without this foundation, opportunities for student success are weakened. To address this concern, we need to address root causes, such as needing to create a sense of belonging for all Walker students, families, and staff. We will strengthen family and community engagement by clarifying access points and implementing strategies that foster a greater sense of belonging for students, families, and staff, leading to noticeable improvements in consistent family participation and overall school connectedness.
Academic Success Update:
Academic success is always a priority at Walker Elementary. This school year, our teachers are adopting the Eureka Math² (EM2) curriculum for Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade. EM2 is a comprehensive program designed to build strong math foundations, strengthen problem-solving skills, and help students see themselves as confident, capable mathematicians.
In the 2025 NAA survey, Walker families shared that academic success is of great importance to them. In response, our teachers are participating in additional professional development to ensure thoughtful, effective implementation of this new curriculum for our students. Teachers are also participating in TNTP research connected to EM2, which provides additional time for learning, collaboration, and planning to best support student success.
We plan to complete the 5 Whys and the official Problem Statement for Academic Success in the future.
Enrichment Update:
Enrichment is the priority that we started the 2025-2026 school year focusing on. Instead of diving into the 5 Whys and Problem Statement of this priority with the Eagle Endeavors group, we decided to continue with our new programming for the remainder of the school year, which addresses the main "asks" from students, staff, and families on the NAA survey from the 2024-2025 school year: increased opportunities for school sports on campus and school clubs for students.
School Sports: Walker is now offering AYSO soccer after school 1x per week (reduced family price), VOLO after-school sports (FREE), and San Diego Neighborhood Basketball 1x per week (reduced family price).
Clubs: Walker is now offering numerous teacher and student-led clubs during recess, which include coloring club, soccer club, volleyball club, chess club, running club, and candy/bracelet making club.
