Sexual Health Education Advisory Committee

The Sexual Health Education Advisory Committee (SHEAC) comprises experts in the fields of health and sexuality education and sexual health services throughout San Diego county. It includes district staff, our district's direct consulting physician from UCSD Medical Center, community health agency partners, representatives from San Diego County's Health and Human Services Agency and the San Diego County Office of Education, San Diego State University professors, faith-based representatives, representatives of the LGBTQ+ community, district students, and parents of district students. This collaborative working group reviews and selects appropriate materials and resources for our students, guides Professional Development for district staff, and helps plan and implement programs that support our students' health. The committee is mandated by our district's cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and supports all grant-required activities. SHEAC has a maximum of 25 members, and membership includes submitting a yearly application, being voted on by current members based on scored qualifications, and signing a Membership Agreement to state one's commitment to implementing and upholding CDC requirements and state and district policies.

Meet the District Advisors

Rachel Miller, MEd (she/her)

rmiller@sandi.net

Rachel taught middle and high school science within SDUSD for 7 years and taught 8th grade Sex Ed for five years during that time. She has been a Resource Teacher within SDUSD’s Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) since 2012. By collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who funds the program and her amazing SHEP team, she does everything she can to support student access to comprehensive sexual health education, youth- and LGBTQ-supportive sexual health services, and safe and supportive campus environments. Rachel thoroughly enjoys collaborating with students and has been so impressed with the efforts by the district’s Student Equity Coalition and student-led sexual health marketing campaigns that students created and promoted both virtually and in-person at their schools over the last several years.

Summer Hellewell, MEd (she/her)

shellewell@sandi.net

Summer has taught middle school English within SDUSD for 12 years and taught 6th and 8th grade Sex Ed for 10 years during that time. She has been a Resource Teacher within SHEP since 2017. Summer’s primary role is training and supporting the many teachers in the district who are implementing sexual health education in their 6th grade, 8th grade, or high school classes. She loves getting to meet so many teachers in the district who are dedicated to their students’ well being and education, and to help make their teaching jobs a little easier.
