How We Assess Numeracy in San Diego Unified
To support every student's math journey, San Diego Unified uses key tools to check in on students’ foundational and grade-level mathematical proficiency progress throughout the year.
For students in Grades K–8, we use i-Ready Math, which shows how well students understand foundation and grade level math skills. The i-Ready Diagnostic is a computer-adaptive assessment that adjusts the difficulty of questions in real time based on student responses. It identifies each student's proficiency level across in math, providing a detailed view of their strengths and areas for growth. The data supports personalized instruction and allows educators to monitor academic progress throughout the year, not for grading, but to guide meaningful teaching decisions.
The i-Ready assessment helps teachers tailor instruction to meet students’ needs. The data also helps families and educators identify areas where reteaching or additional support may be helpful, both at school and at home. It provides a clear picture of student progress and supports strong partnerships between school and home.
In addition, the results help district leaders and policymakers make informed decisions about math supports and resources across our schools.

Resources for Elementary Educators
iReady + Math Catalyst
Assessment services and the Mathematics department collaborated to create a resource that connects results from the i-Ready diagnostic to Eureka Math Catalyst lessons which are meant to provide support for Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction via targeted mini-lessons. This resource will help educators quickly find the Math Catalyst intervention lessons that align with the recommendations from the iReady diagnostic instructional grouping report. SDUSD Elementary Math Assessment Guidance
Grade levels and school sites can use the Assessment Pathways as a guide for developing a balanced mathematics assessment plan.
The goal is to gather meaningful evidence of student understanding through observations, student discourse, and written assessments to inform instruction. Assess with the purpose of checking for understanding towards meeting grade level standards.
To support student thinking and reduce input errors, we recommend that students complete the print assessment first and then transfer their final answers to the digital assessment.
EM2 and Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment Alignment
Use this resource to identify where Eureka Math² lessons and modules align with the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessments. This guide supports instructional planning by helping teachers connect classroom learning to assessment opportunities and use interim assessment data to inform instruction, monitor student progress, and target areas for additional support.
