In order to gain understanding of the sounds of protest music, students will focus on the physics concepts of waves. Students will use online tools such as
Listening to Waves and others to learn about mechanical waves and their properties and how these properties cause sounds to have different qualities, and how these qualities can be integrated to change the message of their protest song. Students will also learn about how mechanical waves differ from electromagnetic waves in that mechanical waves require matter to transfer energy while electromagnetic waves do not. Finally, students will compare analog and digital recordings to evaluate which is a more reliable way to transmit information, and will apply this knowledge to the changes in music recording, storage, and transfer technology through time.
