At different moments in United States history, groups of people have been excluded from the formal channels of the political process and have had to struggle with their lives to have their voices heard. In this documentary film, Howard Zinn narrates many of those important moments. From the struggle to abolish slavery and eliminate racial segregation, the Women's movement enfranchisement and equality, the Labor movements struggle for economic justice , to the anti-war protest movements of the 20th century, Zinn presents distinct voices from the past in the form short narratives and songs. A group of recognized actors and artists narrate the letters, songs and speeches for contemporary audiences.
The document is organized by into social movement topics. Each of those topics list links to short video clips of Howard Zinn presenting background information, the actor/actress reading the historical document and links to more information and further study.
This document contains links to the lyrics of songs and ballads of protest throughout United States History. The document is divided into sections loosely correlated to the RIMS Individuals and Societies for 8th grade. Many of the songs also contain links to performances of the songs.
