The Story Of Me project is about exploring identity through the discovery of our family that came before us. By gaining insight into ones character and exploring the traditions, celebrations, and treasures that make each family uniquely special, our PMA students have begun the fundamental process of recognizing that a true, clear, and complete understanding about ourselves and people different from us is an important and critical step as a changemaker.
Understanding ourselves and our differences cultivates empathy and can work to diminish any inclination to hate, show bias, or hold false view of others. Culturally responsive teacher and author, Gholdy Muhammad teaches us that when children have a strong sense of their own histories and identities, it becomes a refuge, or a protection. As a Mt. View changemaker, students will continue this important work throughout the grades and be inspired to continue throughout their lives.

The final step in our learning process will be to reflect upon what we learned as a class and our own identities, and think about the aspects we have in common and the beauty of our differences.
"If students are going to enjoy a quality of life and live alongside other people, they must deeply know themselves and the histories and truths of other diverse people. Knowing about the cultures of other people teaches them how to respect, love, and live in harmony with others who don't look or know the world as they do." -Goldy Muhammad, author and culturally responsive teacher.
