For this unit: "Life Cycles, Traits, and Variations." Students learned about the life cycles and traits of plants and animals. They took a close look at the physical and behavioral traits of animals like meerkats and flamingos. They also learned how traits can be affected by the environment that the organism lives in and how these can help or harm their survival in the wild.
For their project, our students had a choice of researching the various aspects of an animal’s life cycle and physical and behavioral traits. They also researched how these traits are impacted by their environment and habitat, and how their population has changed over time. They chose the most important research about their animals to share with you in their book.
For this unit, we guided our learning using Core Knowledge's "Life Cycles, Traits and Variations". The unit provided students with a foundational understanding of life cycles and traits of both plants and animals. The text provided students with visuals and vocabulary to better build their understanding.
We used this project planner to guide the students through their research project. We wanted to support the students in their learning, while also giving them the freedom to read books, watch videos and look through sites that were of interest to them.
On the left you can see that students used animal data to create data tables that helped them understand the patterns in animal traits in different litters.
