Patrick Henry High School GATE Program Identification Policy
Placement in GATE Seminar or GATE Cluster classes at Henry is automatic for students who are “District identified,” having met the qualifications for placement in the GATE program based on achieving a Raven Progressive Matrices Test score in the 98th percentile or above or meeting the criteria for GATE identification on the newer CogAT GATE test.
Placement for students who are not “District identified,” but who meet Henry’s “Out-of-District” GATE or Seminar identification criteria, is not automatic. In order to be “Site Identified” for GATE Cluster or Seminar placement, a student must have been given a prior school administered IQ test, and the resulting score must correlate exactly with this district’s identification criteria of 98% or above for GATE Cluster and 99.9%for GATE Seminar identification (or equivalent on the district’s CogAT GATE test). Legitimate “factors” may be taken into consideration.
Parents of students who meet the “Out-of-District” GATE or Seminar identification criteria must notify the Henry Counseling Department in writing that they are requesting GATE Cluster or Seminar placement. In addition, they need to mail, email, FAX or bring in a copy of the documentation which they feel is proof of equivalency, for our school psychologist to review.
Placement in GATE Cluster classes for students who are not “District identified,” but who meet Henry’s GATE Cluster criteria, is not automatic. Parents of students who meet Henry’s GATE criteria (see below) must notify the Henry Counseling Department in writing that they are requesting GATE Cluster placement.
In addition, they need to mail, email, FAX or bring in a copy of the documentation which proves that they meet the criteria, which is either:
1) A score of 90-97% on the Raven Progressive Matrices Test or a minimum score of 121 (90th percentile) on the CogAT GATE test (or on another school administered IQ test from a different district).
-OR-
2) A Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) score, or another state standardized score, of “Exceeds Standard” (or its equivalent) in English/Language Arts (ELA) on the most recent test administration.
Patrick Henry High School GATE Seminar Space Available Policy
All seminar-identified students are placed in GATE Seminar classes at Patrick Henry High School. In the event the number of seminar-identified students does not match the funded class size, the Henry Master Schedule team will select non-Seminar identified students for placement in classes based upon the following criteria:
● Students are ranked and selected based upon their Raven Score and/or CogAt Score
● In the event a tie breaker is required, we will review the student's most recent English SBAC scores
● In the event an additional tie breaker is required, we will review the student's most recent SBAC Math scores
Note: The ELA score receives a higher weighting than the Math score because our district defines Seminar as a Humanities-based program.
