PLTW Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS) is an introductory, project-based high school course (Biology credit) in which students investigate the science behind human health and disease through hands-on learning and real-world scenarios. Students explore topics such as medical diagnostics, genetics, infectious diseases, and the structure and function of the human body. Students will develop critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills by analyzing patient case studies, designing experiments, and using biomedical tools and data. In this course, students will gain a strong foundation in biological concepts and an understanding of how science, technology, and medicine work together to improve human health and prepare students for further study and careers in the biomedical sciences. Students will also learn valuable real-world skills such as CPR, First Aid and Stop the Bleed.
This course is a "D" science credit for Biological Sciences (UC A-G) and satisfies SDUSD graduation requirement for Biology. This course receives weighted credit.
Grades 9-12
Course Offered: Wednesdays 12:30-1:45pm
PLTW Medical Interventions (MI) is a hands-on, project-based high school course in which students explore how modern medicine works to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Through the investigation of real-world medical cases, students study topics such as infectious disease, genetic disorders, immunology, cancer, medical imaging, and biomedical innovations. Learners apply biology, chemistry, and engineering concepts while practicing critical thinking, data analysis, and ethical decision-making, gaining insight into how medical professionals develop and use interventions to improve patient outcomes and advance human health.
This course is articulated with San Diego Miramar College for (Credit by Exam) Biotechnology 131. Credit by Exam (CBE) courses require students to pass an end of course exam to receive the college credit.
Biotechnology 131 (Introduction to Biotechnology) is a college-level course that introduces students to the fundamental concepts, techniques, and applications of modern biotechnology. Students explore topics such as DNA structure and function, genetic engineering, PCR, gel electrophoresis, bioethics, and biotechnology’s role in medicine, agriculture, and industry.
Pre-Requisites: PBS/Biology or AP Biology
This course receives weighted credit.
Grades 10-12
Course Offered: Tuesdays 1:50-3:05pm
This four-month Exploratory Work Experience course prepares students for postsecondary success by blending career exploration with real-world professional skill development. Throughout the course, students build and refine a polished résumé, practice interview and workplace communication skills, and develop a professional digital presence through LinkedIn, including profile creation and networking fundamentals. Students explore multiple career pathways through guest speakers, workplace research, and career interest assessments, culminating in an authentic job shadow, internship, or Leadership Project aligned to their interests. By applying classroom learning in real professional settings, students gain confidence, clarify career goals, and demonstrate employability skills such as responsibility, collaboration, and problem-solving, ensuring they leave the course career-ready and future-focused.
