Students enrolled in an MHS Dance class can expect to learn Jazz, Hip Hop, and Contemporary dance styles!
The Madison High School Dance program is focused on developing students' physical abilities to dance, as well as artistic voice. Students can expect to learn choreography by their teacher, Krista Nelson, as well as from their peers. Students will have ample opportunities to choreograph and co-choreograph in their dance classes.
All dance students participate in the Annual Dance Showcase performance!
Annual Dance Showcase!
Students enrolled in a dance class can expect to perform in the annual dance showcase. The showcase is a special event where all dancers at MHS come together for a night of performance! Students have the opportunity to choreograph work with their classmates for the event, as well as learn choreography from MHS Dance Teacher, Krista Nelson.
Dance Classes can be taken for PE, VAPA (Art) or elective credit! This means that you can take dance all four years of your high school education and still have space in your schedule to explore other areas of interest!
No. Some dance experience would be helpful, but is not required.
MHS Dance uniform is athletic wear in school colors. It is highly recommended to wear the school PE shirt (available year-round at the Finance Office), or MHS dance merch (available at the beginning of each semester) to show your school spirit and support our communities. Students will need a pair of black jazz shoes, and tennis shoes. Students may be asked to dance barefoot as well.
Yes. Every year students in dance classes perform in an annual showcase that features teacher and student choreography. This performance is in the PAC with full stage lighting and costumes.
Since dance is a normal class period, it can fit into your schedule no matter what year you are in your high school journey. Most 9th and 10th graders receive PE credit for their dance class. Most 11th and 12th graders receive VAPA (art) or elective credit for enrolling in dance. Depending on what credits you need, you can be enrolled for different credits (in any dance class period). Talk with your counselor to determine the best option for you!
The dance team performs at the athletic events on campus and around San Diego. These students audition for the team.
Auditions for dance team are twice a year, usually around October and May. It is highly recommended to complete one year of dance class at MHS before auditioning for the Dance Team.
Absolutely! Krista LOVES field trips and does her best to offer every field trip opportunity to dance students.
