For this Project Night we learned about the attributes of a changemaker. We used The Mountain View Student Dispositions to start. We learned that a changemaker is collaborative, thinks critically, uses innovation and has empathy. This led us to learn about changemakers around our community and our world.

We read Iggy Peck, Architect and together found that he in fact is a changemaker who used innovation and his knowledge about bridges to get his class out of a terrible situation.

We learned about Nzambi Matee who used her critical thinking skills to solve the plastic waste problem in her town in Nairobi, Kenya.

We read Separate Is Never Equal and found that the reason why this movement was successful was because people collaborated with their community members and groups and organizations. Together, you can accomplish big things.

Students brainstormed ways that they could make a change in their world.
After some talk they realized that they wanted to start with their school.

Chicano Park Mural Tour Field Trip
Chicano Park Mural Tour Field Trip
Rigo and Josephine who have both been part of the Chicano Park Steering committee and who have dedicated their lives to helping their community were generous enough to take us on a tour of Chicano Park. They told us about the history and the continued struggles they continue to face to keep the park safe and open for others. We learned so much through their knowledge of the parks history and the history of the murals.
This book and our field trip inspired our mural idea to share the story of how our school and community members worked together to make our school a reality.
We got to meet Victor Ochoa who talked to us about his process on the current mural he is working on at Chicano Park.

Through this mural we learned about the pollution in our community due to factories and the big ship industry in the Logan Heights Community.

We got to zoom Rigo and learned more about his life long commitment to changemaking. He started when he was 12! His biggest advice was to follow the thing that you are passionate about and see it through to the end.

Project Proposals
After students decided what each committee would be in charge of they chose the one that they were most passionate about. Here you will see their planning, steps that they took and the steps they are still going to take. After talking to muralists and community members students realized that this would be a year long project. They will continue to send letters, have interviews, collaborate with community members, work with muralists and fundraise to make their mural idea come to life.
