Assignment was to Prepare design files and fabricate models of my choice using 3D Printing and Laser Cutting.
for the 3d model:
i used Low-Poly Darth Vader Head by Mrcanton from thingiverse.com, also i add a hoop for the key chain and scaled the model down to not exceed our printing material limit .
For 3D printing :
we used Ultimaker Cura as a slicing software, and 3d_printed on the Prusa i3 mk2 3d printer, with PLA material filament
For Laser Cutting:
i just watched a movie called LUCA so i drew an illustration using Adobe Illustrator for one of the movie characters called Alberto
we used laserWorks software as our computer controlling system and user interface for the laser machine, plywood (3mm) wood material
setting was straight forward from the tutorial video of each machine
we used cura to set material as PLA and its recommended heat and other settings and Exported the gCode on the printer's sd card , the printing process took about 1h
we used laserWorks to assign engraved / cuts part and power for each, it took about 2min to finish, consist of 2 layer of plywood (3mm)
For 3D printing :
used preheating for PLA
temperature: 215 C
Layer height: 0.2mm
Infill: 20%
no supporting
uploaded the file on the printer's sd card
we cleaned the bed using alcohol
selected the file name and pressed start
after it finished we used a scraper knife tool to get the model out of the bed
For Laser Cutting:
we installed a new plywood sheet we made sure it was a flat straight one
we tested the laser focus.
set up the cutting power to 65 and speed to 25
engraving power 25 and speed to 300
uploaded the file to the machine from laserwork
searched for the file name from the machines screen
set the origin to the sheet's beginning we made a test to make sure of the size of the file
then finely pressed start
lab instructor was so helpful especially that i never used those machineries before
for fun and testing i used my modeling skills in 3dsmax to make a hatch space inside i had a toy laser pointer thought of stuffing it in the body
the opening apartment or hatch i made was a little small so some stuff is sticking out and couldn't put the cover opening back
laser cutting can be used for boxes enclosure and maybe some gears
as for the 3d printing maybe for a complex more hard to do pieces
measure more than once and don't give all your trust in one measuring ruler
i hade a defected ruler :s never thought of that happens
i knew i will have some time before next session so i tried to make my 3d printed model to shoot laser from a toy laser pointer i had layed around
