The idea of week 1 is to be able to fabricate a plywood coaster using Laser Cutting, and to make a key chain for part 3 of my final project by 3 D Printing.
In my new house I will add wood to the décor of the main hall, so I decided to start with a coaster for my cup of tea and milk. ☕
While for the key chain of the security alarm (part 3 of the final project), I chose this key chain with red color so it will be in a vibrant color to let me see it clearly if I forgot where to find it.
Imagining the first cup of tea with milk in the new house. So I decided to make something special for it. also the key chain will be for the security alarm turning off key for the new house as well .
Materials: Plywood 3 mm.
Material: PLA
For Laser Cutting:
I Used (3axis.co) then I made a search for coasters.
since I like cup collecting, so I choose the shape of my favorite cup design.
I saved the file in *.DXF extension
And finally, I transferred the file on a Flash memory.

For 3 d printing
I had to Find a small and only one piece key chain from (Thingiverse)
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2742693
, then I had to transfer it into *.STL format using an app. like rea converter.
Used Ultimaker Cura Software to prepare the *.STL .
It didn`t need any support since it is already bedded and super tiny
infill density 20%
infill pattern cubic.
I chose super quality as it is small in size and I have enough time.
first the nozzle was 0.4 mm away then I changed it to be (Bed level - 0.15).
I had to be sure that it is in the correct orientation, supports, layer height, infill, and brim so we will use the minimum amount of PLA.
Then I pressed slicing to be sure about the time it will take.

Laser Cutting Parameter:
Cut: Power 65 Speed 10
Engrave: Power 40 Speed 200
Speed cut:Power 30 Speed 200
We connected the flashcard, pressed download from the laptop so the design appeared on the Laser cutter screen.
First press origin to choose from where you have to start.
Use the arrow cursors to choose the origin point.
(If you want smaller moves press on z down and z up for making it bigger. )
Press box and make sure not to waste plywood.
Press start and make sure you closed the laser cutter so we will not get harmed and also to prevent the smoke from going out.
Enjoy watching your work done.
(For emergency press stop and inform the lab specialist.)
(I used part of a plywood sheet and 2 minutes.)
For the 3d printer
we connected the flashcard to the 3D printer.
we can use the stick to choose the file and press on it the confirm to start.
It was important to:
Clean the metal stage with alcohol to remove any extra PLA .
Fix the nozzle close to the metal piece down to let the PLA stick to it.
(Bed level - 0.15)
Be sure that the first layer was O.K.
1- We heard pop sounds while printing .
It was due to humidity in the filament. we should not let the filaments out in humid air as it will:
Make pop sounds while evaporating water vapors .
Make strings as well which led to bad finish.
2-The PLA didn`t stick from the first time.
We had to use the alcohol again to clean the metal surface.
Allow the nozzle to be closer (-0.15 Bed level)
3-My peer helped me when she gave me the charger of her laptop. As I forgot mine.
4-The lab specialist asked me about the size of the coaster again so we changed it to be in cm. not mm.
A- It was important to ask the lab specialist about the sound.
B- For changing the files extensions I had to search the internet for an app to do so.
C- Tips before you go:
1- Be sure about the dimensions of the design as sometimes it is in mm. which is so tiny.
2-We should not let the PLA filaments out in humid air as it will effect the final project badly.
3-Allow the nozzle to be close so PLA will stick to the metal surface.
4- Optimum temperature for PLA is 215 in winter as excess heat will spoil more PLA while less heat will not melt it properly so the shape won`t be completed.
5-You have to be sure that the Plywood sheet is a fixed well to the set.
Actually for the laser cutting machine it was so easy and fun.
May be one day I will make coasters using the laser cutting machine. who knows?
I found that to save the file before Laser cutting, we have to save it from export not save so it will be in a .DXF extension.
I will use the 3d printed one as a key chain for part 3 in the final project (the security alarm turning off part)
I am happy I can Fabricate wooden materials that easy .
I will never forget to:
keep filaments away of humidity.
Clean the metal surface of the 3 d printer with alcohol.
Choose the optimum temp. according to the type of the filament and the season as well.
Be sure about the size of the design.
Never to forget the charger again.
