Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

It's a mobile holder, the idea is that the squirrel is like catching the mobile from falling in the form of the mobile holder, and there's like abase which the mobile stand on it and the squirrel catching it from the back. ( which I used Ps to just quick sketch to just figure how it will look like to sketch it on fusion )

and those pictures that I got my inspiration from it so I wanted to do something like that elephant mobile holder but in a sarcastic way so because I like squirrels I think about doing the design but with a squirrel shape or silhouette as it catching the phone from the back.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

I used PS to quick sketch a phone holder on it first to see what the design will look like then I used the fusion 360 to make it with the geometric shapes and specific dimensions

I used PS to sketch the phone holder just for myself to see how it will look like from an artistic perspective before sketching it on fusion software.

I used fusion to could sketch the phone holder parts with the specific dimensions and extrude them to see what they will look like before fabricating them on the laser machine.

  • I also used a laser machine to fabricate the phone holder on(3mm) wood sheet

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

I made abase then 2 squirrels stand by their sides as they holding the phone and there are 2 curves on the phone base to set the bottom of the phone on it to have a place to set on it while at the same time its diagonal on the squirrels.

firstly,

I start to sketch the squirrel by curves, arc, spline, and circles to sketch a cartoonish sketch of it then I extrude them. ( I started first by drawing the squirrel tummy using a curve tool then I started to draw its hip by drawing a circle and cutting it then I drew his leg with lines and curves and finally I drew his face, ears, eyes, and ears using circles and splines and after I finished it I started to define the t- slots and tabs places and started to draw them on the squirrel ).

  • the squirrel height on fusion was ( 85mm)

secondly,

I sketch the base and sides by using tools like rectangles, lines and circles then I extrude them and assemble them with the squirrels by using joints. ( I started to draw a rectangle for the base which was ( 19mm * 195mm ) with the rectangle tool then I started to draw the engraved curves in it with a rectangle tool too then I started to define the t-slots circles and tabs in it to put the squirrels in it, then I started to draw the side with the line tool and put the t slots to it to could put it between the squirrels if I want to make it firmer or remove it when I don't want to put it between the squirrels because already the squirrels are fixed to the base anyways ).

  • the base length was ( 19mm), while the base width was ( 195mm)

after I sketch my design, extrude them and assemble them by joints I started to import them to software Rd works and put them organized together with a little space between them to not waste a lot from the board then set the features of the design where the machine should cut and scan which:

  • color mode - speed - power - output

  • black cut 10 60 yes

  • lilac scan 350 19 yes ( for the squirrel eyes )

  • green scan 300 23 yes ( for the curves and base )

-then imported the design to the machine and start to cut it and it took me (8 minutes and 20 seconds) to cut the design on the laser cutting machine.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

after I finish sketching and assembling all the parts together on fusion software I started to import them to the Rd works and set all the features and the parts that should engrave or cut then I import them to the machine then I started to set my design file and capture the track, worktime preview then I start the running process then I turn off the machine after finishing the cutting process then I assemble them together to form the final shape of the phone holder.

Community of Learning

Did you ask for feedback? What are the ideas that others have contributed or suggested? What was someone else’s idea that you built upon? How did you help your peers? How did your peers help you?

Ahmed Waleed helped me to import my phone holder file because there was an extra line on the file which appear on rd works and hold all the design with it so he helped me to remove that line from the fusion first by cutting the shape and drawing it again that was the only solution that we reached.

( and I had to delete one of the squirrel's mouse lines because they were connected, I tried to separate them but it didn't work so I deleted one of them to avoid cutting both of them )

Overcoming Challenges

When you got stuck, what/who did you turn to? At what point did you have to pause to research or learn more before moving on? What are some mistakes, pitfalls, or challenges that others can avoid if they were doing this assignment?

while we were cutting me and Doaa the laser machine started to track more than the design and didn't want to set the origin point but we started to erase our data and check it again and reset and then started from the first but it works after that.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

I should focus on the machine settings first before starting to cut and prepare the final file before, to reach all the mistakes that I faced at that time.

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

the coolest thing I have learned this week was learning how to sketch on fusion software with dimensions and extrude that sketches and put joints to it was so cool.

Weekly Digest [OPTIONAL]

Tell us about any other cool things that you've made this week: in the Hands-on activity, tutorial examples, exercises, or any other cool mini-project that you tried out aside from the assignment.

the first task of that week was to make a phone holder with low fidelity:

at first, I didn't have a good material of cardboard so I didn't look good at first but after the session ended I give myself 5 minutes to make it from cardboard and I made that.

It is a mix between phone holder & pen holder (it looks like an elephant in a silhouette way and have a basic pen holder inside it )

the second task of week 2 was sketching a spinner on fusion software with a teammate:

and my teammate was Ahmed Waleed we made a middle circle and three circles around it by using circular pattern tool the start to make 3 circles around them to make the big curves of the spinner then cutting the parts that we don't need from it.

the third task of that week was to make a rocking chair with teammates:

my teammates were Lama & Hussien we divided the parts on us and I took the back part, Lama took the base and Hussien took the sides, so we sketch it with the dimensions that the instructor told us about then we extrude it and collect all of them on rd works software then imported to the laser cutting machine to cut them after that we collect all of them together with the screws, and we were the first team to finish :)

I followed the wardrobe tutorial after I watched the videos and I faced a lot with dimensions but finally I did it.
