this week we had to choose 2 models one to slice by 3D printer & the other to cut by laser cutter so:
firstly, I designed a pattern necklace which I inspired from yin yang logo so it has 2 sides one for the good & the other is not the evil side but it is about mental health issues that define our reaction to things. (and that's will be designed by laser cutting technique)
secondly, after I cut my design on a laser machine the instructor told me that the design should be ready-made from the internet this week so I chose Pikachu because it brings back nostalgia and I love that character so I cut it as a keychain to be with me most of the time.
-the other design I chose from the Thingiverse site:
is an animation character that I love called stitch

the 3D printing design
softwares that I used:
I used illustrator for designing my necklace, I also used Ultimaker Cura to set & slice the 3d design that I chose, and used the RD works software to define the scale and the features of my design & Pikachu design.
machines &materials that I used:
-3d printing machine (Prusa i3 mk2), and ( PLA material )
-laser cutter machine

Rd works ( laser cutting software) design firstly:
after I download the Pikachu file from (3-axis) site I imported it to the ( Rd works ) software then I put it on the origin point then I assigned the scan power & speed that I want the machine to engrave it and I just cut around the shape and the circle of the keychain.
the design scale was on ( 6.8cm *6.8cm )
Secondly:
I imported my design and put it on the origin then I started to define where I should cut or scan and then I assigned the power and speed that I want the machine to engrave it.
the design was on a scale (5cm * 5cm )
ultimaker cura ( 3d printer software ) model
firstly, I dragged my design then I defined the size which was ( 23. 4071 mm ) *(21.0522 mm ) that I wanted the model to be printed by it then I assigned its features like infill, layer height, support and adhesion
my model takes 19 minutes to be printed
and it takes 9 Grams

the laser-cut design(Pikachu) features were on :
color-mode- speed - power - output
black cut 10 60 yes
rose scan 350 30 yes
lilac scan 300 25 yes
green scan 350 18 no
salmon scan 350 15 yes
my laser-cut design features were on :
color - mode - speed - power - output
black cut 10 60 yes
green scan 300 23 yes
rose scan 350 17 yes
purple scan 350 30 yes
lilac scan 350 20 yes
these 3d printing model features were on :
layer height on (0.2)
infill density on (10), while infill pattern was ( grid)
printing temp. on (220), build plate temp on ( 70 degrees)
support placement on ( touching build plate ), with overhang angle ( 50 )
with adhesion type ( brim )
the model was
firstly, the laser cutting machine
I imported the designs on the machine USB then I put it to the laser cutting machine then I opened the machine and import the designs to the machine then I save the necklace design worktime preview which was at first ( 3 minutes ) then I modify it again so it takes ( 6 minutes in 2 times ) while the Pikachu design worktime was at first ( 2 minutes, 6 seconds ) then I found it too small so I resize it then I cut it again so it takes ( 4 minutes, 21 seconds ) then after the machine finished laser cutting I turned the machine off and take the USB after that and finally I open the machine cover and took my designs.
( I made a modification on my necklace first try on the laser cutting machine I sanded then I colored it with aquarelle watercolors ).

secondly, the 3d printing machine
I imported my design to the SD card then from it to the machine and choose my model to be printed then the machine takes time to preheat the bed on the (220 degrees ) while its build plate is on ( 70 degrees) then after that it begins to slice the model then after it finished I turn off the machine then I took the model and I started to peel the support & adhesion off.

Salma helped me a lot at first to turn on the machines and set the settings and advised me to fix the gaps that appear on the final model by putting some white paste and sanding it to fix it a little bit, unfortunately, I tried that but the model is too small and has a lot of meanders which make it so hard to sand it after put the white paste and colored it.
at the first, I didn't set an adhesion so it mess up but after I put an adhesion it was conciliation.
the main challenge of that week was that: the final model has some flaws because the layer height was on (0.2) which it has to be (0.1) but this will take a lot of time to be made and maybe because the bed heat was cooler than it has to be which made some gaps in some parts of the model or maybe because the machine has defects ... but its a try and I will never learn without some fails so its okay to have an issue like this.
I should focus on the dimensions and scales of my final project before sketching it on fusion 360, and recognize if my project parts need adhesion, support or not before importing the file to a 3D printer, and also recognize that the layer height will not cause any gaps on the model.
the coolest thing I have learned this week was watching my design or any design come to life by printing it on the 3d printing machine.
on that week we have had a task as a group of three my group was with Salma & Amr:
the task was:
the first part was to make the cartoonish character (Mario) on lase cutting machine and set the speed and the power and make it ready to cut it on the laser machine.
the second part of the task was to make a dinosaur and set the layer height, position, infill and if needs any support or adhesion or not, the model needs just a touching build plate support.
