Week 1 - Journal

Ideation Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

The assignment for 1st week consists of 2 parts(A. for 3D printer & B. Laser Cutting) applications, from selecting an exist suitable object to set the needed parameters for each fabrication technique.

I applied all process as the following:

A. Print Your Look! 3D Printed Sandal

Flexible

Foldable

I picked this item because it is a full product in one shot which is suitable as a first trial with 3D printer machine. Also has a cool look!.

STL. File:

B. Welder Coaster! Laser Cut.

I picked this item because it gives a variety for trying different levels of engraving, so I can watch different result, effects and capabilities of Laser Cutting machine in a single piece, also, I can use a coaster indicates to industry which is related to my field.

DXF. File:

Tool Chain Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

A. 3D Printing Application Sandal B. Laser Cut ting Application Coaster

Software/machines/ materials has been required for the 2 projects as the following:

Material: (PLA blue)

Due to the surface lines of Sandal, the most suitable available technique is 3d printing, Ultimaker-Cura has been selected because it can slice the STL. files and convert it into G file code which is readable for (PRUSA 1 3D Printer.) , now it is ready for fabrication. PLA is selected because of the design needs to be flexible+ it is feedable for (PRUSA 1 3D Printer).

Material: (Ply Wood 3mm)

Welder coaster designed as a flat surface with different levels of engraving, so the most suitable fabrication is Laser Cutting on a woody sheet.

Ply wood 3mm is suitable for coaster function in a low cost and rich appearance.

laser cutting machine has been used because to give accurate cut and engraving with different levels easily in minutes.

LaserWorkV6 portable software has been used because it is computable with Fab Lab laser cutting machine.

Design/Preparation Process

A. 3D Printing Application Sandal

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

  1. Downloading STL. file from the thingiverse.

2. Downloding Ultimaker Cura and Run it.

3. Adding the Fab Lab 3d printer machine (PRUSA 1 3D Printer.)

4. Identifying the material (PLA blue).

5.Draging the STL. file of the design inside Ultimaker Cura workspace.

6. checking the scale and position and amending it.

7.Adjusting the parameters as the following:

  • resolution "0.2mm"

  • infill "20%"

  • activate Support & Adhesion.

8. clicking slice. it will be printed in 1 hour 26 minute min/14g.4.67m .

9. previewing the layers how it will be printed by scrolling the dragger as it's show in the video.

Design/Preparation Process

B. Laser Cutting Application Welder Coaster

  1. .Browsing 3axis.co, then download the DXF. file for the suitable nice design.

2. Downloading LaserWorkV6, it's the Laser Cutter software to prepare the DXF file for Laser Cutting. it's portable software, setup is not required.

3.Importing the selected DXF. file.

4.Re-sizeing the object to a suitable size as a coaster.

5. select parts need to be cut, then select black color (cut mode), engraved lines Level1 (Blue color), selecting Level2 of engraved lines Red color (Scan mode).

6. adjusting the Speed & the power according to the design concept / colors, colors indicates to parameters. black (Cut mode): 15s/65p, Blue (Engraving mode Level 1): 300s/20p, Red (Engraving Level2): 300s/40p.

7. Moving the object to the origin point, clicking and dragging x to the original point. considering 2.5mm from the sheet edge.

8. clicking file, save as rld. file. now it is ready for downloading on Laser Cutting machine.
