our assignment this week was design a 3D pen/pencil holder and use a PRUSA printer.
Therefore, I started to search about cool and multi-tasking holder that could fit with me.
i found this design and and this two columns inspired me to do three columns to put in them my pens and pencils and design a thin column to put in it my plasters.
use fusion 360 for design the holder
Ultimaker Cura software
i use software cura for 3D printed design to slice the stl file and export the gcode file to be ready for printed by 3d machine.
prusa I3 MK3 to fabricate the 3D printed design
white PLA filament
i use PLA because PLA is made from renewable raw materials so PLA is environmentally friendly.
sketching
sketch from the origin on XY plane a center rectangle with a dimension of 100*95 mm.
sketch inside the rectangle 2 circle with diameter 40 mm and 35 mm.
sketch in the second half of the rectangle polygon with 6 sides and a radius of 20 mm.
sketch in z-x plane fit point spline to be the pass of sweep of the polygon.
sketch in the rectangle circle with diameter 25 mm to be base of plasters
sketch on the last circle another circle with diameter 10 mm to be column for plaster
choose a construct and offset plane of XY plane with dimensions 85 mm.
draw on this plan another rectangle with dimensions 90 mm * 85 mm.
go to preferences and choose design then active (Allow 3D sketching..)
sketch a line to connect between the two rectangles.
Loft
1-select the two rectangles
2-choose the loft feature .
shell
1-choose the shell feature
2-select the top of the shape with 3 mm.
sweep
Title of Media
1-select sweep feature
2-select the path and the profile
3-make sure orientation is parallel and the operation is join.
Extrude cut
after i finished my design i found my design will take a 9 hours so i become for fusion 360 to try reduce some material so i use extrude cut
1-i choose the face then select extrude and change operation to cut.
2-make the previous step to all faces.
Color
to change a color
1- right click on the shape
2-choose appearance
3-choose paint
4- drag drop the color
User Experience
convert Sharpe edges to smooth for better use.
choose the fillet feature and select the edge of the circle with 1 mm.
choose the fillet feature again, and do the previous step to all edges .
Export STL file
there are two wayes
right click and choose save as mesh then change format to STL.
choose from file export then select stl .
cura:
open STL file.
change the setting to suitable for the requirements of the assignment.
adjust dimension to make z 60mm,x 61 mm,y 64.5 mm..
make the layer height 0.3 mm.
Use 10% infill .
check on Adhesion to make a skirt.
slicing design to see the time (1h 26 min ).
Numbers of grams 20 g.
save file as .gcode to upload it 3d printing machine.
3D printed:
I transfer my G-code to SD card and put it into the machine
I cleaned 3D printer bed using alcohol
choose my G-code file
i watch the first layer to make sure that all things works well
it took 1 hour 29 minute.
problem:
The problem was that the lower base is not a single base and there is a gab between its layers ,so that can cause a problem while fabricating because they must be a single piece.
solution:
The solution is that i went to fusion 360 and edited the design by making clear to the lowest base and made extrude 5 mm to the carrier base of the parts and I want to thank Eng. Amr because he suggested this solution for me.
Each week over makes the final project come closer but the difference here is the new skills that I got. Now, I could use other features for building 3D design except Extrude like the loft, revolve and sweep which enhance me to make the design of the final project easier, soft, and cool!
Moreover, dealing with the PRUSA 3D printer makes me aware of how the product consists of many layers and how to fit the requirements such as reducing the time by using Vasa mode which really helps me to reach the final product clearly.
