Maker's Clock

laser cutter model

I was inspired by the design idea from Fab Lab,

When I looked around and saw the many tools of the makers, I saw them not just as tools, but as icons expressing the identity of the makers.

So I decided to look for a design that expresses my being an industrial designer and can be used in my workshop, which I plan to do in the near future.

3d printing model

In my first use of the 3D printing machine, I wanted to make a small and simple model so as not to risk and use grams and a lot of time for the product in the first try because it might appear some problems.

So I chose this model, which is a keychain and a mobile holder at the same time. It will be light to use and also looks cute .

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

I did a search on the 3Axis website to learn about different products for laser cutting models and to create a visual summary of several ideas.

After seeing many models, I decided to design a wall clock in the form of makers' tools.

I downloaded the design file in DXF format, then entered it into the Laser Work program to control dimensions, determine cutting and drilling positions, adjust speed and force, and then saved it in .RLD format.

I downloaded the design I selected from one of the websites that has an open source designs ready for printing with an extension '.SDL '

Following this, I started to edit the design with the suitable settings .

Material: Generic PLA / Printing temperature: 215 C / Layer height: 0.2mm / Infill: 20% / Support: Touching build plate / Adhesion: NO

I did a re-adjustment of the dimensions to control the size of the design and make it suitable for the number of grams and the time specified for me.

Then I saved the file with the extension G-code .

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

When I was at the Fab Lab on my appointed day, I transferred the file to the computer connected to the laser cutting machine and sent it to the machine through the same program by pressing download.

Then I moved to get one sheet of wood and put it on the machine.

I operated the machine through the button on the right.

I press File > [Enter] > Memory Files > [Enter] > [Choose file name] > [Enter].

I track the working area by choosing Track Frame then hit Enter.

Then he pressed run and the machine started to work,

In 5 minutes the design was finished.

About the start of the implementation process on the 3D printer, I transferred the file to an SD card

to transfer to the printer.

And when I used it, it was already working, so I searched for my file and selected it to start working.

It was completed in 33 minutes.

The model was somewhat attached to the floor of the printer, so I extracted it using a paint-paste knife in the lab.

Community of Learning

Did you ask for feedback? What are the ideas that others have contributed or suggested? What was someone else’s idea that you built upon? How did you help your peers? How did your peers help you?

Title of Media

While I was in Fab Lab, Mrs. Amani helped me a lot and guided me to some modifications in adjusting the design settings on the program before starting manufacturing.

This made me avoid some of the things that could have appeared in the design and that I did not want or intended.

She also helped me start the machine for the first time.

After I finished my design, I uploaded it to Slack, and I received a nice impression from my colleagues about it.

Overcoming Challenges

When you got stuck, what/who did you turn to? At what point did you have to pause to research or learn more before moving on? What are some mistakes, pitfalls, or challenges that others can avoid if they were doing this assignment?

The challenge for me is the exact time of 3D printing and it was 90 minutes and unfortunately something in the roads broke me + the laptop decided to do an update before it opened .

All this led to the fact that I had to reduce the size of the form to take less time .

Until it reached 5 grams and 33 minutes,This was the only time I had.

Despite that, the final model was a reasonable size and this did not affect the performance of its function, but it was preferable if it was a little larger, The mobile will be installed in it more comfortably.

I learned from that to abide by the deadline set for me and to arrive as early as possible.

And also that the design is ready on the flash and not on the computer only.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

Title of Media

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

The COOLEST thing for me is that I really enjoyed using the machine myself in the lab

It was a very exciting thing for me, and I would like to deal directly with such machines and watch the stages of manufacturing the product.
