Our 9th year student Liisi Kilgas´ logo design was the one, which was chosen for the project.
28th of September we had a sports day where all students and teachers participated having a 100-metre relay race. According to unofficial data nobody has done it before – 100 people running 100 metres. We set up the World record. During the breaks Students’Board organized lots of sport games and moving activities to reduce students’ lack of exercise.
This week our students had a great chance to meet a young successful entrepreneur Sven Nuum (33).
He runs the company BoostYourself which produces super food (powder) to add into healthy smoothies. He told the students his story how he reached to healthy lifestyle and healthy food. In his childhood he had bad unhealthy eating habits, he was often tired and sick. Nobody knew the reason. In his 20s he started to think about why? He studied lots of theories, read lots of books and started to test different healthy smoothies. He also started doing sports. Now he shares his experience how to live healthy life: be active, eat healthy food, do sports, do the things you are good at and interested in- and your future life will be hopeful and healthy.
Our active students organized a sports training group. It was their own idea to start basketball training. First 2 boys studied the rules of the game and now they teach others. They meet every Friday to practice basketball.
On the 15th of Nov. Europe celebrated the day of music therapy for the 5th time already, Our students hosted 2 neighbour schools students. We introduced our project, shared ideas how to be fit and healthy, discussed - is healthy life and wellness a trendy topic among teenagers, how music can be combined with sport and activities , how music influences teenagers' every day life, how to involve all students, parents, community to follow healthy lifestyle.
Today, on World Food Day, our students played Kahoot about our partners´ traditional food and made some healthy sandwiches. Yummy! 😊
Kahoot (it´s in Estonian) https://play.kahoot.it/#/k/5a0938c4-9b39-4005-b74f-20fe51ef1cc4 🙂
On the 31st of October we also wore costumes, because Halloween is quite popular in Estonia too.
On the 13th of November we introduced our project and its main goals to parents.
Our parents agreed with our project´s goals.
Yesterday our students and teachers baked gingerbreads. Our school was filled with delicious smell! 🎅
During Cristmas time, there is a plate with gingerbread cookies, tangerines and candy on every Estonian family´s table. Although there is ready-to-bake gingerbread cookie dough available in all major grocery stores in Estonia, people often prefer homemade version.
Gingerbreads
250 g margarine
1 cup sugar
1 cup dark malt
2 tsp ground cloves
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp cocoa powder
2 eggs
1 tsp salt
5 cups all-purpose flour
Icing: 1 egg white, 2 cups icing sugar, a few drops of lemon juice.
Mix margarine, sugar, spices and malt in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and cool. Whip with electric mixer until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and continue to mix. If you prefer crispy gingerbread cookies, mix the dough as little as possible. Wrap dough into plastic wrap and refrigerate, at least, until next day, but it can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks. When ready to cut cookies out and bake, preheat oven to 175°C. Roll 1/3 of dough on lightly floured surface until thin and cut cookies out with cookie cutters. Bake for 6-8 minutes. To make icing, combine all ingredients. Whip and use immediately. Decorate cookies with icing.
Healthy gingerbreads
cool and crispy gingerbreads from buckwheat flour
2 cups of buckwheat flour
2 cups of almond flour
0,5 teaspoon of soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
0,5 packet of Meira gingerbread spices
( or teaspoon of cinnamon, cardamom, muscat)
0,5 cup of coconut oil
0,5 cup of sugar or agave syrup
0,25 cup of almond milk
First mix dry and wet ingredients separately, then mix all together and pack in plastic food wrap. Put in fridge for some hours or 24 hours. Before baking take out from fridge to soften unroll the dough, cut the cookies and bake under 180 C for about 15 minutes.
A Merry Christmas!

Sport can be really fun! 😉 Some of our students are really fond of discgolf. Even when it is cold and a little bit snow outside. ❄
Discgolf is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target, it is played using rules similar to golf. Our students love it! ...and some are really good at it. 😉
To go to Italy - it is a chance of a lifetime! 😉
We have the competition among students -they had to apply for the trip and on Thursday 17th the winners will be known. Really exciting!😉
Movement and exercises are becoming one part of our school now. 😊
Every month we have one day when we spend all breaks in gym, so-called moving breaks. Even our class´ evenings include sports games. 💪
On the 4th of March we had an Italy´s Special Day: we listened to Italian music, learned some words, danced, ate risotto and played a quizizz about Italy. It was quite fun!
Everyone can play this Italian quizizz: if you have an Quizizz´ account https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/5c3b7c8d684f24001a16d735 or if you don´t have an account https://join.quizizz.com (enter code 544436).
Sporty activities are on part of our school life. We have organized many different games and our breaks are full of movement.
On the 22th of March two our 8th graders organized a game night for our smaller students - they played games and made healthy food together.
Starting from 11th to 15th March our school team had a great chance to visit project partner school in Altamura, Italy. There were 5 students and 2 teachers. We had an amazing opportunity to get acquainted with Italian host families and children, we could attend the classes in school, we made trips to see the beauty of this country and the best sights of the area. We listened to the lectures about healthy eating habits and Mediterranean Diet. We tried to make pasta with Italian grannies. It was a wonderful week.
On the 19th of March our 5 students who visited Italy made their presentations to all students and teachers in our school. We made a slideshow, which you can see here https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1o2etBbuakzgYD89zkVPh_CKO8L55QU4kiItVtF4VZ5A/edit?usp=sharing. Everyone told about the families they lived with, how they communicated in English and what new things they learned being in Italy in a host family. Students were impressed by the Italian culture and sightseeings. They also pointed out the differences in school systems. Co-students had lots of questions to ask about Italy. All the students were really satisfied with this exciting experience they had thanks to Erasmus+ project
A lot of schoolmates were listening and many questions were asked. So it was a great afternoon and hopefully many students are now interested in opportunity to travel to Greece in 2020.
Anyway, we are happy that we got that chance and had that wonderful time in Italy!
On the 22nd of March our students wrote an article about the Erasmus+ project and their trip to Italy in local newspaper. Their shared the info about our project, its goals and activities. They introduced their experience and knowledge they got during the week in Italy.
On the 7th of April the whole world celebrates The World Health Day. This year the theme is very simple “Health for all”.
World Health Day is used to celebrate with lots of people to provide them with awareness about the health. It is important to look after the health to make you more stable and strong.
Our school has planned lots of different activities throughout April to raise our students’ awareness about health. We started discussions on the topic of what is healthy food. Students studied the food pyramid and made posters.
According to the World Health Organisation’s message -it is beneficial for people to perform a lot of Healthy diets by which everyone can be able to get the proper Health to maintain better Health.
This week our students studied what does healthy menu consist of, what is Mediterranean diet and what kind of fresh and healthy salads can students make themselves. The pictures show our students in cooking classes preparing different healthy salads. ( And in addition not so healthy Italian style Tiramisu!!!)
*in English: School that Invites to Move
This means that our school tries to combine learning and moving. We have different moving breaks on different weekdays:
on Monday we have PeaceBreaks
on Tuesday DanceBreaks
on Wednesday GameBreaks
on Thursday DanceBreaks
on Friday GymBreaks or TableTennisBreaks
These breaks are organized by students.
Last weekend our students from 6-9th grade had a night full of sports. It was organized by two 8th grade girls.
The girls themselves said it was lots of hard work and at the same time lots of fun.
The night involved four guests, sports games and making healthy food. In different grades students had to do teamwork. For example there were many different and funny games:
"Chocolate game", which involes chocolate, hat, gloves, scarf and running;
“Goat”, which means that you are a goat, who runs towards hula hoop, does five twists and then goes down like animal and then comes another people, who also does five twists and then jumps over the first one;
“Colour in the cup”, which involves candies, speed and sorting.
“Tennis pall on spoon”, where you ahd to be prompt and hold the tennis balls balanced on spoons.
Also we played basketball, watched movies and had a battle of knowledge. Also we played discgolf and had a photo hunting.
A milkshake is usually a sweet, cold beverage that is usually made from milk, ice cream, or iced milk, and flavorings or sweeteners such as butterscotch, caramel sauce, chocolate syrup, or fruit syrup.
Our students made a little bit healthier milkshakes using milk, bananas, different berries, juice and some ice cream. It was a good cooling sip in the warm spring day!
On Monday our students devoted their 15-minute breaks to meditation in school yard. Everyone knows it’s good to your mental health. We celebrated the National Garden Meditation Day - it’s the time to forget about everything else, just take time for yourself, relax and meditate. It’s restorative to the soul and a refreshing way to be out in nature. Meditation helps to reduce stress and increases peace and well-being. Students enjoyed these breaks very much.
8 months have passed since we started the project of how to be healthy and practice healthy lifestyle habits.
On Friday, the 10th of May our students made the first summary how they have changed their habits and what have they learned thanks to project. We devoted the whole school day to it.
In the morning the students had to discuss how they have changed their every day habits to be more active and healthy.
In the class they made posters where they had to write down their favourite activities during the breaks, what sports they practice out of school, what equipment does the school need to practice more sport and make the breaks more active.
Then every class had to present and introduce their posters and ideas. We got so many good ideas what our students expect and want to do.
After that we all went out to school stadium to have our sports day. All the students took part in contests of long jump, run races, shot put and ball throw.
It was a wonderful day full of discussions and practice how to be fit and healthy.
In May our students focused on healthy food and eating habits. In their cooking classes they talked about the following topics as healthy food and ecological food.
They studied to read the labels what does concrete food consist of - protein, fat, sugar, salt and etc. They learned about the preservaties in food. They tried to find the healthiest food after reading all the labels.
And then they started to cook healthy food and healthy salads. Now everyone is aware of labels and ingredients and they know step number 1 before buying is READ the label carefully.
Last week the students visited nearby eco farm. They listened to the farmer who introduced his farm and his cattle. Students saw how the cows are milked and heard how this milk reaches to our dinner table. They heard about the ecologically grown vegetables and why they are good for health. It was a very interesting visit to an eco farm.
Our students also visited Teeääre Stables, which is a wonderful place with amazing horses.
Students saw how to take care of horses, got a horseback hike and also had fun while riding with carriage.
You can find more informatsion about Teeääre Stables here: link
On the 28th of May our students went orienteering.
Orienteering is a group of sports that require navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed.
Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points.
It was a lot of fun and also hard work!
On Friday (07.06) our students and teachers made summaries of our first Project year.
The teachers had prepared several tasks to revise all the knowledge students had studied during this year.
First students were divided into teams who had to pass the knowledge contest .
Every classroom was like a workshop where the students had to:
solve different tasks,
answer the questions,
do different brainstorming using their digital devices– tablets or phones and computers
All the topics were taken from our project theme- such as:
healthy life,
sport and activities,
moving habits,
healthy food,
eating habits,
reading the barcodes correctly,
eco farms,
ecological food.
Most of the teams passed the contest perfectly. Both students and teachers said it was fun and surely an educating day.
Today (11.06) our students will get their reports and summer holidays will begin.
Sure everyone is a little tired and bored of hard work during the year. What does help?
Our students know it perfectly - be active, do some sport (walking, jogging, cycling etc) and tiredness will diappear.
The day before (10.06) we organised a hiking day. Whole school -all the students and teachers went hiking (some cycling) to the nearest forest and seaside.
We hiked about 7 km and then sat down, ate some healthy fruit, breathed fresh seaside air and started back to school. We were lucky to have a wonderful weather for hiking.
Every Tuesday afternoon in September our teachers have racked their brains how to arrange our project partners visit to our school.
On the picture you can see our team preparing our meeting.
Next week we will meet our project partners in Estonia. It is really exciting to prepare their time here. We have so many ideas!
We decided that those days here should be active, full of different events and also fun. We will also visit some beautiful places, do some sport, spend time together and have a lot of fun!
We planned to organise different workshops so that students will learn something new and make something theirselves.
And also show our unique culture to our friends.
Our teacher really want to be part of the project!
The second week of September our students were busy picking up the healthy vegetables and fruit from their home gardens. Amazing figures made from vegetables and fruit were displayed on exhibition. This year’s slogan was “Our new headmaster” .
16th September there was held parents’ meeting and also parents had chance to vote for the best design. Students and teachers chose their favourites too. The best were given awards.
On the first day at our school our students worked as guides and showed the school and classrooms. It was a good chance to practice their English. Then we moved to Culture House and our guests participated in the concert to get idea of our culture that is full of folk dance and choir singing.
In the afternoon we had a great football match - teachers versus students. Everyone enjoyed football both players and spectators.
On Tuesday morning there was an autumn sports day-all our students and all the partner students took part in different sports activities.
After sports day we went to our capital city Kuressaare. We had a great meeting with our commune elder Madis Kallas. He introduced our island, but the most important part was - he told about his sportsman career, healthy lifestyle habits he had and has also today. He encouraged students to be active, to do sports and follow healthy lifestyle and eating habits.
In the afternoon we visited Medievial Activity Centre. There were different workshops and stories about the history.
On Wednesday morning we had different kind of workshops. For example workshops of healthy cooking. Students made healthy salads from fresh vegetables and fruit. Later we all tasted those delicious salads.
In the afternoon we visited ecofarm and saw real cows and calves who give us healthy milk. Everyone who wished could give some bread to cows and pat them. Then students had chance to make healthy ice-cream. It was really cool.
On Thursday we visited Angla Heritage Centre - all teachers and students got to know how is made healthy rye bread and everyone could make their own rye bun and after baking we could taste it.
In the afternoon we visited our famous Castle in Kuressaare. There was held “Treasure hunt” where students got the map and had to find historical spots in the castle.
On Friday we went to our capital city Tallinn. Guests had chance to visit our Zoo and Old town sightseeing.
Our project meeting in Estonia was reflected in the newspapers Meie Maa and Saarte Hääl.
At the end of October, during the school holiday, lots of students volunteerily came back to school. They spent some days in joga camp which was held in youth center next to schoolhouse. Students practiced joga, had lectures of healthy lifestyle and also cooked healthy food for theirselves. Everyone said it was worth to take part in the joga camp – it was fun and relaxing and at the same time useful for body, and they got much new information how to spend free time healthily.
In December before holidays our students made surveys about Greece. As our next project trip will be to Greece. Students studied the eating habits and especially typical Christmas food of the country.
Students made presentations and shared their knowledge to schoolmates in English. Those who also applied for to be in the project trip team to Greece were very active and did a great job to find the info and present it to others. Here is just one example - made by Mihkel from year 9.
According to the project activity plan we had to meet some famous sportsman or champion in December.
It was very easy for us- no doubt or question who will it be. Sure our world champion who was born in our island Saaremaa.
Ott Tänak was born 15 October 1987. He is an Estonian rally driver. He is the BEST rally driver in the world, because he won the World Rally Championship in 2019. In 2019 he competed for Toyota but from 2020 season for Hyndai.
As he is very busy with his rally driver’s job-we couldn’t ask him to come to school but we had a great chance to watch the movie. Last year a documentary film about Tänak’s life and rally career was released. Everyone could see how to achieve success, and how much time and work it takes to be on top.
This movie was exciting and lovely at the same time. The film portrays Estonian rally driver Ott Tänak, one of the most elusive athletes in the eyes of the media with highly reclusive character. His self-willed tenacity has forged this stubborn country boy with a roller-coaster career into a driven rally pilot. For the first time, he is in reach of fulfilling his childhood dream – to snatch the world championship title from equally hungry competitors. In addition to Ott himself, people who have been close to him at different times in his life are opening up about the foundations of his adventurous life and career.
"The best quality film I've ever seen of rally." - Malcolm Wilson, M-Sport
"It showed the highs, the lows and everything in between. The reality we never get to see. The human story." - Becs Williams, Rally Commentator
"The film, like Tänak's career, is a rollercoaster." - David Evans, Autosport
Estonians are really proud of him!
In January our students organised a contest of healthy recipes. All the students could offer the best healthy recipe in their opinion. Then everyone could vote and so we chose the best to put in our E-cook book. After that the girls tested the recipes in their cooking classes. All the other students and teachers were invited to taste them. We found that all of them were very delicious. Now we can share our recipes to other project partners, so that they can give their opinion.
In the pictures you can see our girls preparing healthy food in cooking class.
Watch our e-cooking book here: https://www.calameo.com/books/004273356ba565d134301
In February our project team created an interactive game to check our students knowledge of healthy fruits and vegetables. It was great fun to check what our students remember about healthy food and also learn new things on this topic. Younger students solved the questions in Quizziz and older ones played Kahoot. Our students enjoyed it very much. Now we can share those games to other project partners so that they can test their knowledge.
Despite of COVID -19 our students haven’t forgot our project goals. Starting from March 12 all the students and teachers had to stay home and learn a lot - basically practising new IT tools to carry on their distance-study at home. It was an exciting challenge to students and teachers both to hold video lessons through Google Meet and using other different IT tools: Quizizz, Google Drive, Learningapps, ScreenCastify, Powtoon, WizerMe etc.
In April the students had homework to make healthy breakfast at home, take a photo of it, also describe in English how they make it and what ingredients they used. Everyone had to send a photo and then our “IT - Fairy Mariliis” compiled the virtual exhibition of the photos. Enjoy the exhibition (click here) and get the new ideas of our students’ healthy breakfast.
