Elementary school is a time for students to begin understanding themselves and others. This includes learning the skills they will use throughout their lives to communicate effectively, get along with others, seek information when needed, and develop interests leading to their eventual career. Some foundational standards of career awareness, exploration and readiness will be taught during classroom guidance as well as throughout their elementary curriculum. The American School Counselor's Association recommends the following career awareness standards for elementary students:

PS:B1.6 Know how to apply conflict resolution skills
PS:C1.5 Differentiate between situations requiring peer support and situations requiring adult professional help

PS:C1.7 Apply effective problem-solving and decision-making skills to make safe and healthy choices
